Veterinary Assistant/Technician

Position Summary
Idaho Equine Hospital is seeking a dependable, motivated Veterinary Assistant/Technician to join our team. This position works closely with our veterinarians and support staff to provide exceptional care to equine patients in a busy hospital and clinical environment.
The ideal candidate will have strong horse-handling skills, a positive attitude and the ability to remain calm and organized in both routine and emergency situations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely handle, restrain and move horses for examinations, treatments and procedures
- Assist veterinarians with routine appointments, diagnostic procedures and emergency cases
- Prepare patients, equipment and treatment areas for procedures
- Assist with radiographs, ultrasound examinations, injections, catheter placement, bandaging and other treatments as directed
- Monitor hospitalized patients and promptly report changes or concerns to the attending veterinarian
- Administer medications and treatments under veterinary supervision
- Collect and prepare blood, urine and other diagnostic samples
- Maintain accurate patient records and treatment sheets
- Clean, disinfect and organize stalls, treatment areas, equipment and hospital spaces
- Stock supplies and notify management when inventory is low
- Assist with patient admission, discharge and client communication
- Follow all hospital safety, biosecurity and infection-control protocols
- Participate in emergency care, weekend or holiday coverage as scheduled
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Horse-handling experience is required
- Ability to safely and confidently work around horses of different ages, sizes and temperaments
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Dependable, punctual and able to follow instructions
- Ability to remain professional and composed in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to learn and accept constructive feedback
- Ability to work independently while also contributing to a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in an equine veterinary hospital, veterinary clinic, barn or related setting
- Veterinary assistant or technician training
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to bend, kneel, reach, push and pull
- Ability to safely restrain and work around large animals
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks throughout the shift
Schedule
This is a full-time position. The schedule may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays and emergency coverage depending on hospital needs.
