Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), assist with basic surgical procedures on
laboratory animals. Basic procedures will include developing T cell-based immunotherapies and other
vaccines, animal behavior such as rotarod, gait, etc. (according to IACUC protocols). This involves dendritic
cell preparations, tail vein injections, and the ability to administer anesthesia as well as SQ, IV, IP, and IM
injections to animals, and performing perfusions.
Under the supervision of the PI, analyze tissues using immunohistochemistry, fluorescent microscopy,
and confocal microscopy as necessary. Perform ELISAs or Luminex assays as appropriate to quantify
proteins of interest and analyze data. Perform DNA and RNA extractions as necessary for generating the
vaccines. Assess results and modify techniques as needed with PI approval. Research PubMed articles.
Ensure that experiments are completed in a timely manner. Analyze data, prepare written reports and
presentations of research findings as necessary.
Assist in the maintenance of a database of all research results. Retrieve and manipulate computerized
data to be used in publications and presentations. Obtain, analyze and store digital images acquired during
immunohistochemistry, fluorescent microscopy, confocal microscopy and anatomical images acquired
post-operatively. Maintain computer databases and a daily log of research activities/results. Maintain tissue
bank.
Coordinate general laboratory maintenance and workflow, including ordering supplies, maintaining
inventory, assisting with budgeting of laboratory funds, and maintaining compliance with EH&S. Train,
direct and coordinate activities of undergraduate assistants, volunteers and other laboratory personnel.
Write Standards of Procedure (SOPs) and protocol addenda. Ensure compliance with IACUC, EH&S and
radiation control.
