To manage, direct, and coordinate the school district’s student transportation system. This includes ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the daily bus routes, overseeing the maintenance and repair of the district’s fleet at the bus garage, and managing transportation personnel in compliance with state and federal regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Operations & Logistics
- Route Planning: Design, implement, and evaluate all student transportation routes and schedules (including special education and extracurricular trips) using routing software to maximize efficiency and safety.
- Emergency Management: Serve as the primary decision-maker for transportation delays, accidents, and inclement weather protocols.
- Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, state education codes, and federal safety standards.
- Customer Service: Act as the primary point of contact for parents, school principals, and community members regarding transportation concerns, routing issues, and student discipline on buses.
Bus Garage & Fleet Management
- Maintenance Oversight: Supervise the Head Mechanic and garage staff to ensure a rigorous preventative maintenance program for all district vehicles.
- Fleet Readiness: Ensure all buses pass mandated state inspections and maintain detailed service records for every vehicle.
- Inventory Control: Oversee the procurement of fuel, parts, and garage equipment, ensuring cost-effective purchasing and accurate inventory tracking.
Personnel & Budget Leadership
- Staff Management: Recruit, interview, train, and evaluate bus drivers, monitors, dispatchers, and mechanics.
- Training & Safety: Lead regular safety meetings, coordinate mandatory driver training, and manage the district’s random drug and alcohol testing program.
- Budgeting: Develop and monitor the annual transportation budget, tracking expenditures for fuel, parts, labor, and capital fleet replacement.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree ( a mix of experience and job knowledge can be used in place of education)
- Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in transportation operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. Experience in a school district setting is highly desirable.
- Licenses/Certifications: Must possess (or be willing to obtain within 90 days) a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Skills: Proficiency with transportation routing software and fleet maintenance tracking systems. Exceptional communication and conflict-resolution skills.
Pay: $87,375.00 - $103,000.00 per year
