Organizational Description: Breathe Southern California (Breathe SoCal) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization focused on achieving clean air and healthy lungs through research, education, advocacy, and technology. The organization, which began in 1903, runs an array of health- and environment-related educational and outreach programs to increase public awareness about lung diseases (including asthma, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer), and works towards eradicating these diseases by addressing the main causes of lung disease: tobacco and air pollution.
Breathe SoCal programs provide patient education programs to those with lung disease (including families whose children have asthma), as well as educational programs aimed at tobacco and vaping prevention, improving air quality, and promoting zero-emission vehicles. The organization also conducts public policy advocacy locally and in Sacramento, where we advocate on behalf of public health and environmental legislation that supports our mission.

General Statement of Duties:
The Advocacy & Programs Associate will be responsible for: (1) Conducting research, writing, and outreach activities to help Breathe SoCal develop and advocate for key public policy initiatives related to public health, the environment, and clean energy, (2) Building and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders to increase awareness of, and support for our public policy and advocacy initiatives, (3) Tracking federal, state, and local legislation related to our priorities, and writing letters of support/opposition, and (4) Helping plan and organize events to facilitate coalition-building with other stakeholders, educate the community on our priorities, and promote our advocacy and public policy efforts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Working under the direction of the Manager of Advocacy & Public Policy, essential functions for this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Research issues relevant to the organization’s policy agenda.
- Draft letters of support for key legislation and policies.
- Track and analyze state legislation and local policy proposals.
- Prepare memos, research reports, correspondence, flyers, social media posts, and other documents as directed by your supervisor.
- Assist in writing policy backgrounders and white papers.
- Attend various meetings and participate in various coalitions and advisory groups. Participate in various community meetings, events, and activities to build and maintain positive relationships with community partners and other stakeholders.
- Research, identify, pursue opportunities for partnerships, and cultivate relationships with environmental, community-based, health, transportation, political, government, nonprofit, civic, business, youth, labor, and faith organizations throughout Southern California to advance the organization’s policy agenda.
- Maintain, organize, develop, and grow outreach database and stakeholder lists
- Make cold calls to build relationships and promote community workshops on behalf of Breathe SoCal,
- Coordinate, engage, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Implement grant projects, including coordinating and organizing webinars and educational workshops, town halls, online and in-person briefings, webinars, public meetings, surveys and focus groups. Coordinate logistics for events, as well as pre- and post-event details, including, securing, and coordinating vendors, securing venues, targeting promotions, securing speakers, recruiting participants, etc.
- Develop social media content to promote events and public policy priorities.
- Assist in collecting and analyzing project data to measure performance, evaluate effectiveness, and identify areas for improvement. Help monitor and track grant progress, ensuring adherence to timelines and budgets to guarantee that deliverables are met, and reports are submitted on time.
- Help conduct research, surveys, and focus groups; and draft reports, briefing papers, policy documents, memos, letters, brochures, and social media posts.
- Up to 20% travel required to attend events and meetings across Southern California.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Detail oriented with strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong writing skills and verbal presentation skills.
- Outgoing, personable, and comfortable with public speaking.
- Good judgement; strong problem-solving abilities to identify issues and implement appropriate solutions.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to effectively prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment and handle several projects at one time.
- Experience planning events.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Docs. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Canva.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Sustainability, and/or Public Health.
- The ability to work well independently and as a member of a team.
- Over one year of relevant experience.
- Up to 30% travel required to attend events and meetings across Southern California.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Community organizing or related experience working with hard-to-reach populations.
- Familiarity with research and data maintenance tools including software platforms to engage and help manage partnerships (e.g., Salsa Labs)
- Comfortable with door-to-door canvassing and cold-calling to obtain information
- Proven ability to establish effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience cold-calling organizations and stakeholders to obtain information
- Experience working for, or with, a nonprofit organization, government agency, elected official, or community-based organization.
- Familiarity with the legislative process at the local (LA City, LA County) and State levels.
