The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides essential personal support services to individuals with developmental disabilities in accordance with person‑centered plans, agency policies, and regulatory requirements. This role ensures the health, safety, dignity, and independence of each individual served while maintaining professional standards of care.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Personal Care Assistance — Provide support with activities of daily living (ADLs), including hygiene, grooming, dressing, toileting, and mobility.
- Individual Support Planning — Implement individualized support plans and document progress toward established goals.
- Skill Development — Assist individuals in developing and maintaining life skills such as meal preparation, household tasks, communication, and social interaction.
- Community Integration — Support participation in community activities, appointments, employment, and recreational opportunities.
- Behavioral Support — Follow behavioral support strategies and maintain a calm, supportive environment.
- Documentation & Compliance — Complete required documentation accurately and in a timely manner, including daily notes, incident reports, and progress summaries.
- Health & Safety Monitoring — Observe and report changes in physical or emotional condition; ensure compliance with safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum age 18
- Ability to pass Level II background screening (if applicable to your state)
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (if transportation support is required)
- Ability to lift and assist individuals as needed
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to ethical, respectful, and person‑centered care
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities
- CPR/First Aid certification
- Training in crisis intervention or behavioral support
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations governing disability services
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work may occur in private homes, community settings, or agency facilities
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and repositioning of individuals
- Ability to respond to emergencies promptly and appropriately
