Position Summary
The Wastewater Department Helper assists with routine maintenance, repair, inspection, and general labor tasks related to wastewater treatment facilities, sewer collection systems, lift stations, grounds, tools, and equipment. This entry-level position supports department staff in keeping wastewater operations safe, reliable, and compliant while learning the basic skills needed for a career in public works and utility operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Assist with maintenance and cleaning of wastewater treatment facilities, lift stations, sewer lines, manholes, buildings, grounds, tools, vehicles, and equipment.
· Help inspect, repair, and maintain pumps, valves, motors, meters, screens, and other wastewater system components under supervision.
· Perform general labor duties such as mowing, trimming, sweeping, painting, pressure washing, debris removal, and basic facility upkeep.
· Assist crews with sewer line repairs, service calls, utility locates, and collection system maintenance.
· Help load, unload, move, and organize materials, supplies, parts, tools, and equipment.
· Follow safety procedures when working around confined spaces, traffic, chemicals, equipment, and wastewater facilities.
· Respond as directed to routine maintenance needs, service requests, and emergency situations.
· Maintain a courteous and professional attitude when working with coworkers, contractors, and the public.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
· High school diploma or GED preferred.
· Valid driver’s license required; commercial driver’s license is preferred.
· Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
· Basic mechanical ability and willingness to learn wastewater operations, tools, equipment, and safety practices.
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
· Dependable attendance and ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.
· Previous experience in public works, utilities, construction, maintenance, landscaping, or equipment operation is helpful but not required.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to perform manual labor, stand and walk for extended periods, bend, stoop, climb, reach, lift and carry materials, and work around wastewater facilities, machinery, traffic, and uneven terrain. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
Schedule and Work Environment
Work is generally performed during regular business hours, with occasional overtime, call-outs, or emergency response as needed. Duties may be performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and may involve exposure to noise, odors, chemicals, wastewater, and moving equipment.
