The Academic Advisor II, Coordinator of Outreach, Events, and Communications serves a vital role in advancing student success initiatives by coordinating content strategy, events, and coaching tools for the Academic Success and Advocacy Program (ASAP), First-Generation Student Initiatives, and Basic Needs support at UAH. This newly integrated communications and outreach piece contributes to student retention through strategic communications, student engagement, and digital outreach efforts.
In the advising capacity, the incumbent is responsible for managing the academic progression of assigned students from matriculation through graduation. The position focuses on students identified as having persistence challenges, including those on academic action, students considering major changes across colleges, first-generation students, financially challenged students, and other students who may be considered at risk for persistence or timely graduation.
The unit is supported by student program assistants, three full-time success advocates/advisors, a director, and a data analyst.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Provide academic advising services to undergraduate students through individual and group advising/coaching sessions.
- Create and manage a plan for intrusive, developmentally appropriate student-level interventions for each assigned student.
- Identify core issues, triage concerns when appropriate, and connect students to appropriate departments and resources when necessary.
- Manage outreach and communication strategies, including a year-round calendar of content for social media, websites (First-Gen, ASAP, and Basic Needs, Navigate UAH, and other channels, including video, photography, copywriting, and graphics.
- Develop and maintain a suite of tools/resources for advocate use in coaching and self-guided exploration by students.
- Coordinate the university's deployment of the ChargerBlue chatbot.
- Collaborate with offices across campus to align communication strategies and outreach efforts with institutional priorities.
- Monitor chatbot metrics, respond to alerts, and work to increase student engagement with the bot and timely response to student needs with the objective of increasing retention.
- Liaise with others in the office to translate and communicate student responses to faculty, staff, and students.
- Assist with designing and sending behavioral nudges, updates, and self-advocacy prompts using Emma or NavigateUAH.
- Represent the office on Navigate UAH communications working group. Represent ASAP on the University Marketing Group
- Plan and execute signature ASAP and First-Gen events, such as Week of Welcome activities, Orientation programs, Honors Day, Mental Health First Aid Trainings, and NavigateUAH workshops.
- Coordinate office participation in institutional and student-focused programming, including but not limited to Fresh Check Day, Registered Student Organization training, First-Year Experience courses, academic recovery workshops, recruiting events, and Summer Bridge programs.
- Build relationships with community partners to assist with recruitment and retention efforts.
- Represent the department at recruitment or related events.
