Michigan Club Swim is in need of a new swim coach for the 2026-2027 academic year (and potentially thereafter, if the candidate shows continued interest).
College club swimming provides a competitive and inclusive environment for athletes who wish to continue swimming at a less demanding level than NCAA programs. Michigan Club Swim (MCS) caters to over 150 registered members, ranging from relatively new competitive swimmers to ex-D1 athletes. MCS aims to attend 2-3 swim meets per semester, including a home meet at Canham Natatorium, along with CCS Nationals in late March/early April.
Practice is held Mon-Thurs, beginning late September and continuing throughout the academic year until CCS Nationals. Historically, practices have been held at Mack Indoor Pool in Ann Arbor, although the team may be moving to the new Hadley Family Recreation Center located on campus. Due to pool availability and to avoid student schedule conflicts, practices are held later in the day, from 9:00 to 10:30 PM. Typically, a group of 30-40 swimmers regularly attend practice.
As our coach, you would be responsible for writing workouts, running practices, correcting stroke technique, creating relays for meets, and forming relationships with our swimmers. While you would be expected to attend as many practices as you can, it is certainly okay to miss every now and then! It is the job of the co-presidents to fill in as coaches whenever you may need to be elsewhere. Our club is managed by a 12 member E-Board, which manages all other tasks that are not explicitly designated to the coach.
MCS does not have a super strict, intense culture that you may find in USA club teams or high school teams. While practices can certainly be difficult, it is up to the swimmers as to how much effort they individually put in. However, 90% of those who attend practice do greatly apply themselves, especially those who aim to attend CCS Nationals.
"Why does this role suit me?":
- Great for new coaches looking to take their first steps in their coaching journey, or experienced coaches looking to manage their own team
- Ideal for those looking to make extra money on the side outside of typical school/working hours
- Offers a chance to connect with dedicated UofM students
- Ann Arbor has been named the best swim city in America. Coaching here serves as a pathway to elite teams such as Club Wolverine, the Division One University of Michigan Swim Team, and prestigious high school teams such as Pioneer High School and Saline High School.
Pay and benefits:
- Hourly pay, including time spent outside of the pool writing practices. $20-24/hour, flexible
- Bonuses for attending swim meets
- Compensated travel to meets
- Paid lodging/flight tickets to away meets such as CCS Nationals
Ideal Qualifications:
While we would prefer candidates to have some coaching and/or competitive swimming background, none is required! We want to hear from all willing applicants. There is no age restriction; even current college students are encouraged to apply. We do want candidates to be comfortable speaking loudly and clearly in front of our swimmers.
