About the Director of Community Development
The Director of Community Development is responsible for providing leadership and support for initiatives that strengthen Door County’s communities and economic vitality The position works collaboratively with local governments, businesses, and partners to advance projects and programs that support community sustainability and growth.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Community Development
- Supports community development initiatives that strengthen Door County’s economy, including housing, broadband, childcare and transportation initiatives
- Builds strong relationships with Door County communities—including the county, cities, villages and towns—to identify opportunities and address local and county-wide economic development challenges
- Collaborates with partner organizations, municipalities, businesses and community groups on projects and initiatives aligned with DCEDC priorities
- Represents DCEDC through community engagement, presentations and partnership development efforts
Broadband Implementation and Digital Skill Advancement
- Leads the County of Door Broadband Advisory Committee including oversight of implementation, coordination of initiatives, integration of digital inclusion efforts and maintaining FiberNet Door County (website)
- Supports municipalities in completing broadband projects and in participation in the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program
- Pursues strategic initiatives with school districts, Door County Medical Center and other partners to expand digital adoption and engagement in education and telehealth
- Tracks and reports progress related to broadband adoption, community impact and long-term sustainability efforts
Housing Attainability and Affordability
- Supports housing initiatives focused on attainable housing development opportunities throughout Door County
- Leads efforts to attract residential development in Door County, including planning and implementation of Development Tours to highlight Door County opportunities
- Leads DCEDC’s Attainable Housing Committee to engage and collaborate with communities, businesses and housing related partners
- Informs businesses and communities regarding local, regional, state and national resources toward housing development
- Collaborates with housing related partners to support housing efforts underway throughout Door County
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree and / or equivalent experience in community development, economic development, planning, housing, public administration or related field
- Demonstrated understanding of economic development
- Ability to quickly learn Door County’s diverse communities and economy
- Exceptional written and verbal skills
- Excellent organizational, prioritization and project management skills
- Ability to take initiative, manage multiple priorities and adapt within a collaborative small-team environment
- Ability to build relationships and work effectively with multiple constituencies including local governments, businesses and community organizations
- Ability to research, coordinate and advance community development initiatives
Salary and Benefits
- Salary commensurate with experience – general range $65K-$80K
- 6% deferred compensation into DCEDC 403(b) program
- Reimbursement for travel mileage
