Position: Veterinary Assistant
Salary: Hourly
Reports To: Medical Supervisor, Tiffany Johnson
Position Summary
Veterinary Assistants work alongside our Shelter Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians to ensure the health and well-being of the shelter felines, including medication administration, intake of new felines, adoption exams, and daily rounds. Must be willing to work positively with a team and maintain integrity during patient care.

What You'll Do
Patient Care & Handling
- Get to know our cats individually and recognize when something's off medically
- Learn and follow Hermitage Medical Treatment protocols
- Become proficient in fear-free handling and restraint
- Prepare and distribute prescription diets per our Wet Food Feeding Guide and Individual Feeding List
- Weigh, bathe (including lime sulfur baths for ringworm cats), and groom cats as needed
Medical Procedures
- Administer medications (PO, SQ, IV, anesthetic), vaccines, and SQ fluids as directed by the DVM, VTs, or Treatment Sheets
- Calculate medication doses accurately
- Assist with diagnostics: venipuncture, bloodwork, SNAP tests, urinalyses, cytologies, DTMs, and radiographs
- Prep patients for surgery (dentals, spay/neuter, amputations, etc.)
- Assist Veterinary Technicians during medical emergencies
- Assist with euthanasia and arrange proper aftercare
- Follow Isolation Ward protocols, including lime sulfur dips for ringworm cats per protocol
Shelter Operations
- Facilitate new intake appointments
- Support the Foster Program by coordinating foster appointments with the Medical Team
- Transport cats to/from off-site treatment as needed
- Learn to operate and maintain Hermitage Medical equipment
- Maintain a clean, organized, well-stocked Medical Department with strong cross-contamination awareness
- Keep medical records accurate and current
- Prepare adopters with medical records, answer medical questions, and confirm cats are medically sound before adoption
- Assist with general Medical Department administrative work
Qualifications
- Valid Arizona driver's license and/or reliable transportation
- Veterinary Assistant Certification (required)
