Veterinary Technician – Paws Veterinary Clinic

Key Responsibilities:
Daily Medical Duties
- Assist doctors with exams, diagnostics, and procedures using Fear Free, low-stress handling techniques
- Perform blood draws, catheter placement, imaging assistance, sample collection, and run diagnostics
- Monitor anesthetized patients during surgery and dental procedures
- Administer injections, SQ fluids, medications, and treatments under direct DVM supervision
- Accurately record all treatments and SOAP notes in Shepherd EMR before end of shift
- Handle hospitalized patient care including feeding, walks, comfort checks, treatments, and vitals
- Discharge patients with clear, professional communication about medication and follow-up instructions
- Fill and label prescriptions and educate clients at discharge
Fear Free Focus & Patient Safety
- Identify and use Fear Free strategies for each patient (treats, towel wraps, pheromones, and more)
- Read and respond to stress signals in pets to reduce fear, anxiety, and aggression
- Prevent injury by practicing safe and appropriate restraint—do not allow yourself or others to be bit
- Log and update Fear Free preferences and handling tips in the patient’s medical record
Surgery, Dental, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy & Equipment Prep
- Set up and maintain surgical and dental suites: oxygen, monitors, ET tubes, anesthesia machines
- Prepare and autoclave surgical packs and restock materials
- Verify all surgical consent forms and ensure estimates are ready for review
- Double-check medication doses and routes before administering any treatments
Daily Coordination
- Participate in morning team huddles with CSRs and DVMs to review Fear Free flags and PVP needs
- Track your cases throughout the day—round off to another tech only if needed to stay on schedule
- Communicate clearly and kindly with team members throughout the day
- Complete callbacks and record all client communications in EMR
- Additional tasks as outlined by management (may vary day to day)
Opening & Closing Duties
- Morning: Turn on and calibrate equipment, walk hospitalized patients, stock rooms, set up for surgery/dental
- Evening: Final treatments and walks, fully sanitize rooms, document all notes, restock supplies, lock up securely
- Ensure all diagnostics, samples, and labs are labeled and prepared for IDEXX pickup or refrigeration
- Additional tasks as outlined by management
Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- 2–3 years minimum of experience in a veterinary clinical setting preferred
- Technical proficiency in patient handling, restraint, blood draws, diagnostics, and anesthesia monitoring
- Strong communication skills and a calm, empathetic demeanor under pressure
- Comfort using computers and veterinary EMR systems (Shepherd preferred)
- Fear Free Certification (clinic-paid) required before employment begins
- Must adhere to all clinic policies, including our no gossip policy
Certified veterinary technician (CVT) is not required, but encouraged.

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
