A CDL car hauler driver transports new or used vehicles from manufacturers, ports, auctions, dealerships, and customers using a specialized multi-level car carrier trailer.
Typical responsibilities include:
Loading and unloading cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks onto the trailer using ramps and hydraulic controls.
Securing each vehicle with chains, straps, or wheel restraints to prevent movement during transport.
Inspecting vehicles before pickup and after delivery, documenting any existing or new damage.
Driving safely while complying with federal and state CDL regulations, including hours-of-service rules.
Planning routes, completing delivery paperwork, and communicating with dispatch and customers.
Common requirements:
Valid Class A CDL.
Clean driving record.
Ability to work at heights on the upper deck of the trailer and climb ladders.
Physical ability to bend, climb, lift, and secure vehicles.
Car-hauling experience is preferred by many employers, although some companies provide paid training.
