Under the direction of the Youth Services Manager, the Bookmobile Coordinator provides library service and programming by driving a bookmobile to multiple outreach sites throughout McCracken County. These sites include nursing homes, assisted living facilities, daycares, parks, schools, and community agencies. The Bookmobile Coordinator will also oversee the Books by Mail service to homebound patrons.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establish and maintain a bookmobile route schedule and recommend changes to library management.
- Change and rotate books on a continuous basis with attention given to patron requests and needs.
- In charge of cleaning and maintaining the bookmobile, keeping daily mileage and maintenance logs, and ensuring the vehicle is in safe working order.
- Initiate vehicle updates and upgrades as needed, including gathering quotes.
- Compile records and reports.
- Assist patrons with book selections.
- Use a laptop computer on the bookmobile to perform circulation duties and update bookmobile information with the library’s automated software.
- Coordinate and participate in outreach events to promote the library throughout the community.
- Participate in the library's social media team and promote outreach events through social media platforms.
- Visit schools, daycares, assisted living facilities, nursing homes and other agencies to conduct programming and promote library programs and services.
- Oversee Books by Mail service to homebound patrons.
- Collect library materials from the book drop locations around town at least twice a week.
- Performs clerical support duties such as maintaining patron records, filing, and preparing reports.
- Train substitute bookmobile drivers.
- May plan and direct the work of clerks and/or volunteers, and may assist with their
orientation and training. May occasionally provide service at the Library’s circulation and/or information desks.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of library methods and procedures.
- Ability to operate library machines properly.
- Keyboarding and filing ability; PC navigation skills in a Windows-based environment.
- Basic Microsoft Office Suite skills (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Working knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
- Willingness and ability to speak in front of groups.
- Capacity to monitor assigned budget and adhere to guidelines while planning for expenses.
- Ability to safely drive a large van (Ford Transit cargo van or similar)
- Willingness to maintain skills in the above-mentioned areas through active
participation in appropriate library skills learning experiences.

- Work requires sitting for extended periods in a confined vehicle with limited access to restroom facilities.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Communication skills: effectively communicate ideas and information both in
written and oral form.
- Reading ability: effectively read and understand information contained in
memoranda, reports and bulletins, etc.
- Ability to comprehend and follow instructions: effectively follow instructions from
supervisor, verbally and in written form.
- Mathematical ability: calculate basic arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division) without the aid of a calculator.
- Time management: set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS
- Inside and outside work environment.
- Flexible work hours; frequent evening and weekend hours.
- May work alone in the library or in community locations outside of the library.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or GED plus some college level coursework is required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Keyboarding and general office experience.
- Some previous library or work experience.
OTHER:
- Must pursue and maintain state certification following the guidelines outlined by KDLA (725 KAR 2:060) within the first five years of employment.
- Possession of valid driver’s license.
- Must have access to personal vehicle (mileage reimbursed at state rate)
