Experienced Line Cook / Short-Order Cook
Hill Country Tavern is a locally owned neighborhood bar and grill just outside Bertram, Texas. We serve classic bar favorites including burgers, wings, chicken tenders, catfish, steak fingers, sandwiches, tacos, quesadillas and fried appetizers.
We are looking for a dependable, experienced line cook who can prepare food quickly and consistently while keeping the kitchen clean, stocked and organized. This is a hands-on position in a small tavern kitchen, so you must be comfortable working independently as well as alongside other kitchen staff.
Responsibilities
- Prepare menu items accurately and consistently according to established recipes and portions
- Operate the flat-top grill, fryers and other kitchen equipment safely and efficiently
- Manage multiple orders and coordinate cook times so each table’s food is served together
- Cook burgers and grilled sandwiches to the correct temperature and doneness
- Prepare wings, hand-battered items, fried baskets, quesadillas, tacos and appetizers
- Complete daily prep work, including portioning, chopping, breading, stocking and preparing sauces and toppings
- Read and follow printed or electronic tickets, including substitutions and special requests
- Monitor food quality, cooking temperatures and ticket times during service
- Keep the line stocked and communicate promptly when ingredients or supplies are running low
- Follow proper food-storage, labeling, date-marking and rotation procedures
- Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen throughout the shift
- Assist with dishes, trash, equipment cleaning and opening or closing duties as needed
- Work cooperatively with bartenders, servers, management and other kitchen employees
Requirements
- Previous line-cook or short-order cooking experience in a bar, grill, diner or casual restaurant
- Experience operating both a flat-top grill and commercial fryers
- Ability to stay organized and produce accurate orders during busy periods
- Ability to work independently without constant supervision
- Good understanding of food safety, cross-contamination prevention and proper cooking temperatures
- Dependable attendance and reliable transportation
- Clear communication and a team-oriented attitude
- Willingness to clean, restock and help wherever needed
- Current Texas food-handler certification or ability to obtain it promptly
- Availability for Full or Part time shifts, including evenings and weekends and some holidays
- Ability to remain on your feet throughout the shift and safely lift up to 30 pounds
Pay and Schedule
- Pay: $15-22 per hour, based on experience
- Expected hours: 25-40 hours per week
