Peer Support Specialist
Hourly Rate: $20.00 - $22.00
Encompass Community Supports, formerly known as Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services (RRCS) is hiring for a Peer Support Specialist at the S.E.E Recovery Center.

At Encompass Community Supports, our full-time employees work 37.5 hours weekly.
Our Peer Support Specialist provides recovery support services to adults with substance use and/or mental challenges. Peer Support Specialists may also support family members of individuals who experience these behavioral health challenges. Additionally, Peer Support Specialists provide non-clinical, person-centered, strengths based, wellness focused, and trauma-informed support while helping to ensure the person’s Recovery, Resilience, and Wellness Plan (RRWP) reveals the needs and preferences of the person being supported to complete their measurable and personalized goals. Work is performed under regular supervision.
SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Shared lived experiences in recovery from mental health challenges and/or substance use.
- Support the daily operations of the SEE Recovery Center, a peer-led drop-in center which serves as a community hub for connection to recovery supports and resources.
- Provide face to face interactions that support an individual achieving their self-identified level of recovery, wellness, and personal strength.
- Provide nonjudgmental peer-to-peer support in groups, encouraging and supporting self-directed participation.
- Mentor community integration activities, one-to-one and in group settings.
- Provide emotional support during the acquisition, exploration, and sustaining of employment and/or educational services.
- Perform Recovery Capital Scale Strengths-Based Assessments.
- Assist in the development of Recovery, Resiliency, and Wellness Plans and quarterly reviews to ensure service needs and self-identified measurable goals are being supported.
- Complete documentation in the Electronic Health Record system within 24 business hours of completed service (Documentation notes, enrollment forms, assessments, recovery plan, progress entries, etc.).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of mental health and substance use disorder.
- First-hand knowledge of recovery process and ability to promote multiple pathways of recovery, wellness, and healing.
- Knowledge of the basics of crisis intervention and principles related to health and wellness.
- Knowledge of Ethics and boundaries of Peer Specialists.
- Ability to conduct activities in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Knowledge of trauma and its impact on recovery.
- Knowledge of local community resources and services delivery systems.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 2 years of personal experience living in recovery with mental health and/or substance use challenges or offering proximal support of a person who experienced mental health/substance use challenges.
- Certified as a Peer Recovery Specialist in Virginia, or completion of the DBHDS 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist training program, or eligible to become Certified.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- APPR (Action Planning for Prevention and Recovery) facilitator and/or certified SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training) Recovery facilitator
- Speaking Spanish is a plus.
