GoCar Tours San Diego is looking for a dependable, hands-on Assistant Manager with strong mechanical ability to help oversee our daily rental operation and keep our fleet safe, maintained, and ready for customers.
This position combines fleet operations, light mechanical work, team leadership, and customer service. It is not a desk-only management role. The right person will be comfortable troubleshooting equipment, performing routine maintenance, working directly with vehicles, assisting customers, and stepping in wherever needed to keep the operation running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Operations and Maintenance
- Inspect GoCars and other rental vehicles before and after each rental.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and minor mechanical repairs.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, battery, and operational issues.
- Keep vehicles properly fueled, charged, cleaned, and ready for the next rental.
- Track maintenance needs, parts, repairs, and vehicle downtime.
- Coordinate outside repairs when a problem cannot be completed in-house.
- Maintain tools, parts, equipment, and fleet inventory.
- Help ensure all vehicles meet company safety and appearance standards.
Assistant Management
- Support the General Manager with daily shop and fleet operations.
- Help open and close the location.
- Lead and support employees during scheduled shifts.
- Assign daily tasks and make sure operational priorities are completed.
- Help train employees on rental procedures, vehicle preparation, safety, and customer service.
- Address operational issues quickly and communicate important information to management.
- Assist with scheduling, inventory control, and general facility upkeep.
Guest Experience and Rental Operations
- Greet customers and create a friendly, professional experience.
- Explain vehicle operation, tour routes, safety procedures, and rental requirements.
- Open and close rental contracts and manage reservations.
- Answer customer questions by phone, email, and in person.
- Process payments using the point-of-sale and reservation systems.
- Help resolve customer concerns in a calm and professional manner.
- Assist customers before and after their tours, including vehicle check-out and return.
Required Qualifications
- Hands-on mechanical ability is required.
- Experience maintaining, repairing, or troubleshooting vehicles, motorcycles, scooters, small engines, rental equipment, or similar machinery.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose basic mechanical and electrical issues.
- Previous experience in operations, rentals, automotive service, hospitality, retail, or a similar customer-facing environment.
- Leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Responsible, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Comfortable using computers, reservation systems, and point-of-sale systems.
- Able to work independently and make sound decisions when management is not on-site.
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Able to work on your feet, outdoors, and around vehicles throughout the day.
- Able to bend, kneel, use hand tools, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus.
Schedule and Availability
- Full-time position, approximately 40 hours per week.
- Weekend and holiday availability is required.
- Schedule may include opening and closing shifts.
- Flexibility during busy tourism periods is important.
