LOCATION: Detroit
GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general direction of attorneys and paralegals, the candidate will be responsible for providing legal, administrative, and clerical support to the Immigration Practice Group.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain database, charts, and calendar reminders for timely filing of extensions, petitions, and applications.
- Assist in preparing employment-based applications and petitions for filing with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) and the Department of Labor (DOL), including Consular filings in Adobe, printing and sending out.
- Monitor and follow through on outgoing packages.
- Utilize USCIS website to research needs for filing – checks for filing fees, address where to file, documents and forms needed, etc. and also utilize USCIS website to submit service requests as needed.
- Prepare engagement letters and open new matters.
- Process incoming mail – scan, circulate, update database/charts, and prepare letters.
- Prepare expense reports and travel pre-approvals.
- Prepare letters and affidavits supporting applications and petitions.
- Obtain and organize documents supporting applications and petitions.
- Coordinate translation of foreign documents and coordinate equivalency and evaluations of foreign degrees.
- Organize and maintain client electronic files.
- Work as a team to assist with legal assistant coverage needs due to overflow and absences.
- Perform other related administrative functions as assigned.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and project management skills.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
- Independent judgment to complete activities and work under general supervision.
- Must be knowledgeable regarding concepts, practices and procedures of USCIS and DOL.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Experience using INS ZOOM preferred.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience with the following software programs preferred: Microsoft Office (Work, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe DC.
- High level of initiative to get tasks done and ownership of work product.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR TRAINING
- Minimum two years’ experience as a legal secretary in immigration (preferably business- based visas) in a law firm environment or equivalent experience.
High School Diploma or equivalent required; relevant college courses and/or certification preferred.
