Plans, organizes, and directs the instructional and administrative activities of an assigned division; provides divisional leadership that will ensure a quality instructional process; provides program coordination and curriculum review; provides highly responsible instructional and administrative staff support to the Dean. Coordinates assigned activities with other College divisions. Proficient in the skills and qualifications that align with the faculty and program chair job descriptions as well as being credentialed in at least one degree or program area under direct supervision.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching Excellence and Student Success
1. Ensures timely completion of the Academic Continuous Program (General Education Foundation or
Programs of Study) by all program/discipline chairs and provides direction and support to create a culture
of improvement to achieve student success.
2. Provides support and direction to program/discipline chairs to ensure that classes are scheduled
to meet student needs at all locations/times/formats; provides appropriate office support.
3. Counsels and advises students; participates in the student grievance process.
4. Associate Deans may teach up to six-load units per academic year.
Faculty Support and Coaching
5. Participates in monitoring and coordinating the development and visibility of instructional courses and
programs; ensures that courses and programs reflect current practices and comply with policies,
procedures, goals, and objectives.
6. Reviews, recommends for approval, and monitors the use of course syllabi, materials, and textbooks;
maintains currency on instructional techniques and methods.
7. Mentors faculty and staff utilizing the college Individual Development Plan. Actively engages in suggestion
of professional development opportunities. Facilitates succession planning.
Leadership
8. Participates in the development, planning, recommendation, implementation, and administration of
goals and objectives; develops and recommends new or modified courses and programs; supports all
instructional initiatives of the college.
9. Participates in the marketing of programs; recruits students; coordinates the activities of advisory
committees; makes presentations to outside contacts.
10. Coordinates operations within the division; participates in the development and administration of the
divisional budget; forecasts and recommends funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and
supplies; monitors and recommends approval of expenditures.
11. Provides direction for the ordering of textbooks and instructional materials; approves workloads;
recommends and implements policies and procedures; ensures faculty qualifications/credentials are
current.
12. Provides information pertaining to SACSCOC, accreditation, Critical Core reports (GenEd – if applicable),
and other institutional requests.
College Administration and Institutional Reporting
13. Develops and serves on committees and task forces; attends regularly scheduled meetings;
researches and develops recommendations related to the operation of the division.
14. Confers with and advises appropriate administrators; makes timely response to requests for
information. Coordinates assigned instructional and administrative activities with those of other
instructional divisions and outside agencies and organizations.
Talent Development, Supervision and Faculty Selection
15. Manages the supervision, contracting, evaluation and professional development plans of full-time
faculty and staff; oversees the recruitment, selection, contracting and evaluation of part-time faculty
and staff; collaborates with the Faculty Credentialing office to ensure all faculty are properly
credentialed prior to job offer.
16. Uses the college Classification /Compensation system and other related policies and procedures and the
NC Administrative Code as it affects the division.
17. Appoints program/discipline chairs/coordinators with the approval of the Dean; appoints
faculty/staff to committees.
Other
18. Represents and performs other duties for the College as requested.
