We are seeking a smart and creative full-time tutor/1:1 to work with our daughter, Lexi, age 17. She is entering 11th grade at a small private school that specializes in providing K-12 education for a wide range of high-functioning students with learning differences who struggle to learn in other academic environments.
Lexi is bright and curious with a very sociable personality, and is enthusiastic about learning. She has special needs, and her academic abilities are uneven; the ideal tutor would be able to understand and appreciate her strengths and intelligence as well as her challenges. She is a strong reader (at a middle school level) and is capable of doing (with support) basic science, basic algebra and geometry, social studies, etc. at roughly a middle school level, but her abilities are uneven. For example, her facility with words (roots, vocabulary, etc.) is very good, while she requires more work in areas such as inferencing, and summary of main ideas. In addition, she requires support with social skills, motor skills (including handwriting, typing), focus/executive functioning, and tasks of daily living.
The position involves a combination of 1:1 teaching and providing support in group environments. The 1:1 teaching portion includes a) extending, expanding, or breaking down what she's learning in the group setting to tailor it to her considerable academic abilities and also her processing needs, and b) developing additional appropriate learning materials for subjects in which there is no appropriate group setting. The support piece would be for times when she is a small classroom setting or when engaged in other school activities.
This is a great opportunity for someone who would like to have the space to create a special 1:1 teacher-student relationship with an extremely delightful and energetic student and who would enjoy getting to know a unique learner.
Qualification:
The ideal candidate will have a solid educational background and enthusiasm for learning, and a flexible mindset. We are seeking an educator who is capable of creating engaging academic projects that match our daughter’s interests and abilities and challenge her while also providing a level of support that allows her to gain confidence and mastery of the subject matter.
The position would include working at the school when it is session and, ideally, at home during some school breaks.
While experience in special needs education is a plus, we are open to any applicant who is thoughtful, flexible in teaching approach, and interested in developing a strong rapport with our daughter.
