American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring a minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and an AL or compact RN license.

Float pool position assigned to a home Med/Surg unit on the first day of orientation

Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center hospital with 492 beds
-
Possible unit assignments include: 6 North Trauma Surgical (general/vascular surgery), 5 South Neuroscience (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy, spinal fusion, and more), 5 North Med/Surg Oncology (MS/oncology, palliative care, ETOH withdrawal), 4 South Clinical Decision Unit (COPD, CHF, sepsis, end-of-life, and other general Med/Surg), 3 South Orthopedics (joint replacements, fractures, fusions), and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology (urology, ENT, ortho, Med/Surg)

Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment

Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours

Floating may occur to like units (MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU task, MS-to-ER/MS holds)

12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, 36 hours per week

Every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month required
-
No on-call requirements

EMR: Cerner (preferred)

IV pumps: Plum 360 | Medication dispensing: Omnicell | Monitors: Spacelabs

Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle via Smart Square; no self-scheduling

Active AL RN license or compact RN license required (can submit pending with ETA)

Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
-
Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
-
Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; Cerner required if experience is strictly ICU-based
-
Chemo administration certification preferred for candidates interested in the Oncology unit
-
Telemetry experience is a plus — candidates with tele experience should be prepared to detail that background
-
Unit-specific skills may include: wound care, chest tubes, trach care, NGT/PEG tubes, IV starts, central line blood draws, ostomy care, PCA pumps, wound vacs, and more depending on unit assignment

At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for 6 North Trauma Surgical unit consideration

DOB (day and month) and SSN required for consideration

One reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration

Copies of current certifications required for consideration

First-time travelers are welcome to apply provided they meet the minimum experience requirements

Previous permanent staff must have a gap of at least 6 months from their last shift before returning as a traveler

Travelers new to the facility or returning after 1+ year absence will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours of on-unit orientation

An interview is required as part of the hiring process

Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 ratio for vitals, ADLs, glucose checks), charge nurse, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs

One major and one minor seasonal holiday coverage is expected per policy; specific holiday assignments are not guaranteed prior to arrival

Blackout RTO dates apply to multiple periods throughout the year, including MLK Day, Valentine's Day week, the entire month of March, Easter, Mother's Day weekend, Memorial Day week, Father's Day weekend, Fourth of July, Labor Day weekend, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas/New Year's

Up to 7 days of time off may be approved excluding blackout dates

Any scrub color is acceptable

Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
