GENERAL PURPOSE
Prepare crossing zones and assist children in crossing streets safely during the school year.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives direction from the Crossing Guard Coordinator but ultimately is responsible to the Special Services Commander.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Directs and escorts students (pedestrians) across streets, stopping traffic as necessary.
- Guides and/or controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic
- Communicates traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults.
- Directs traffic movement and warns of hazards, using signs, flags wands, and hand signals as needed.
- Monitors traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which students (pedestrians) can cross streets.
- Distributes traffic control signs and cones at designated points. Turns on and off school crossing signs and flashing speed limit lights.
- Wears and uses safety equipment (vest, cones, stop signs, etc.) taking additional caution when in the road.
- Communicates to students (pedestrians) the importance of following traffic rules as needed.
- Works at City or special events as requested by the Crossing Guard Coordinator.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.

Additional Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must possess a valid Utah Driver’s License
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, background check, and driving record check.
- Must be able to continually walk for up to 1 hour with minimal breaks.
- Must have sufficient sight and hearing for traffic control and monitor potential dangers.
- Must be able to hold stop signs visible to cars while walking.
- Must be able pick-up traffic cones and potentially lift and help children in the road.
- Must have daily access to a smart phone to be used for the timekeeping and scheduling application.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
Ability to speak and understand Spanish
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Tasks require employee to be in the road and alongside moving vehicles.
- Mental exertion dealing with children and communicating to them on their level.
- Works in all weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, snow and rain.
- Involves walking and standing for long periods of time.
- Requires picking up/carrying traffic cones, holding a sign for long periods, and may need to be able to lift and help children in the road while crossing.

DISCLOSURE OF INFORMATION
In the event of a declared emergency or any undeclared emergency or natural disaster, that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers. Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency.

As this position exists under the public safety department of Herriman City, applicant understands that all employees of the public safety department may be subject to random drug and alcohol screening and may be selected at any time for random screening.
