Under indirect supervision, provides independent psychiatric care in a variety of clinical settings to a specified population of behavioral health patients. Provides consultation and advice to others as a highly-specialized practitioner.
II. Roles & Responsibilities
· Performs psychiatric examinations and evaluations, diagnoses, treatment, follow-up, consultation, and education.
· Obtains patient histories and develops patient care charts, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
· Provides health education to students, families, and/or community health practitioners and groups, within the area of specialty.
· Supervises and/or coordinates the activities of patient care and/or support staff.
· Administers a specific health care activity, as appropriate.
· Coordinate care with psychiatrists, social workers/LPC/therapists, and primary care providers.
· May participate in planning programs and in developing specific health policies and procedures.
· Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
· Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
· Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications.
· Evaluate risk (suicide/homicide) and manage emergency situations when needed.
· Complete timely, accurate medical records in compliance with PCSG policies and procedures.
· Responsible for making independent decisions based on protocols developed utilizing national guidelines for treatment interventions.
· Ability to work effectively on multidisciplinary teams
III. Qualifications & Education Requirements
- Master’s degree in nursing with 6 months to 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Educational requirements to become a nurse practitioner often require a MSN (Master of Science in Nursing), followed by specialization in psychiatric mental health training and certification (PMHNP- Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner).
- Must be credentialed per UNM HSC policies and procedures if billing for services under Medicare/Medicaid.
- Must be certified by state required certifying body.

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
· Knowledge of health education theory and practice.
· Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
· Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
· Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.
· Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of behavioral health/psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in area of expertise.
· Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
· Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems and teleconferencing
VI. Physical Demands
· Often requires standing, sitting, and walking for prolonged periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 20 lbs. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports.
VII. Working Conditions
· Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
· Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
