Medical Assistant Job Description

Essential Functions
- Perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to support the delivery of patient-centered care.
- Assist healthcare providers with patient examinations, treatments, and procedures.
- Obtain and record patient medical history, vital signs, and other relevant information accurately.
- Prepare examination rooms, ensuring cleanliness and organization.
- Administer injections and medications as directed by healthcare providers.
- Perform basic laboratory tests, including blood draws and specimen collection, and prepare samples for testing.
- Assist in patient education, ensuring patients understand their conditions, treatments, and medications.
- Coordinate patient referrals, appointments, and follow-up care as needed.
- Maintain electronic health records (EHR) and document patient information accurately and confidentially.
- Adhere to infection control and safety protocols to ensure a safe healthcare environment.
- Collaborate with other healthcare team members to provide comprehensive and coordinated care.
- Support the mission and values of the community health center and actively participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Assist with training and mentoring other medical assistants.
- Other duties as assigned.
Front Desk Duties:
- Manage patient appointments, scheduling procedures, and follow-up visits using electronic health records (EHR) scheduling software.
- Verify patient insurance coverage, obtain pre-authorizations, and process insurance claims accurately.
- Greet patients warmly upon arrival, ensuring a positive and welcoming experience at both locations.
- Answer phone calls promptly, address patient inquiries, and relay messages to physicians as needed.
- Handle patient registration, including demographic data entry and updating patient records in electronic health records (EHR).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of medical terminology and clinical procedures.
- Proficient in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and basic computer skills.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to communicate professionally (verbally and written).
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
- Ability to present a pleasant, professional demeanor and image.
- Mathematical aptitude.
- Ability to show empathy to distressed individuals and assist with identifying solutions to problems identified.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and independently.
- Attention to detail for accurate data management.
- Sensitivity to cultural diversity and an understanding of community needs.
- Knowledge of healthcare, social services, or grant-funded programs is a plus.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Certified or registered medical assistant (CMA/RMA) designation required.
- Phlebotomy experience required.
- 3+ years of experience in primary care, outpatient, or family medicine setting preferred.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
- Proficiency in Electronic Clinical Works (ECW) software preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or listen.
- The employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms to assist patients and/or clinic staff.
- Occasionally assists with moving wheelchair bound patients, clinical equipment, and office supplies up to 35 pounds.

Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
