Job Summary
The Senior Technology Manager will own the technical execution and engineering health of one or more cross-functional delivery pods. This role is accountable for engineering quality, pod-level architecture decisions, production readiness, reliability outcomes, and the team’s ability to deliver maintainable software safely and predictably. Delivery accountability remains important, but it is grounded in engineering execution ownership rather than project coordination.
This role will lead engineers directly, stay close enough to the code and systems to make sound technical trade-offs, and partner with Product Management, Account Management, Architecture, Operations, and adjacent engineering teams to turn committed outcomes into reliable production software. This position will participate hands-on in software design, technical decomposition, estimation, code review, and delivery risk assessment while coaching engineers, improving engineering practices, and ensuring the pod has the capacity, skills, and clarity needed to execute well.
Key Responsibilities
- Own pod-level technical execution, including technical decomposition, estimation quality, engineering sequencing, and capacity realism for committed work.
- Provide technical leadership for design decisions within pod scope, ensuring solutions are maintainable, scalable, secure, and aligned with platform and architecture direction.
- Set and enforce code review standards, engineering quality gates, definition of done, and defect prevention practices across the pod.
- Improve CI/CD health, automated test coverage, test strategy, and release validation so the pod can ship confidently and recover quickly when issues occur.
- Own production readiness, including observability, runbooks, rollback strategy, incident response readiness, and clear engineering ownership for supported systems.
- Provide go/no-go recommendations from an engineering risk perspective, clearly communicating quality, reliability, security, and operational trade-offs before release.
- Partner with Project Management and Account Management to support client-facing plans by providing the technical sequencing, risk assessment, and engineering reality behind delivery commitments.
- Manage assigned software engineers and developers, including expectations, goal setting, feedback, performance reviews, coaching, and performance improvement actions where needed.
- Develop engineers through regular 1:1s, career planning, technical coaching, growth assignments, promotion readiness input, and support for sustainable team health.
- Own pod capacity planning and staffing decisions for direct reports, balancing delivery commitments with engineering quality, operational load, and growth needs.
- Lead hiring for engineering roles in the pod, including role scoping, interview quality, calibration, and selection decisions.
- Use engineering and flow metrics such as cycle time, defect escape rate, deployment health, incident frequency, and recovery time to identify improvements and increase predictability.
- Represent the company in client-facing technical discussions by explaining engineering trade-offs, release risks, mitigation options, and technical paths forward.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, including technical leadership of modern web applications, distributed systems, or high-traffic production platforms.
- Recent hands-on technical depth within the last 3–5 years through software design, implementation, architecture participation, code review, production support, or comparable technical contribution.
- 5+ years direct experience managing software engineers or developers, including performance management, career development, coaching, hiring, and team health.
- Strong understanding of API design, data model fundamentals, service boundaries, integration patterns, and technical trade-offs in client-facing software delivery.
- Experience with CI/CD practices, automated testing, code quality standards, observability, incident response, rollback planning, and release readiness.
- Proven ability to lead technical initiatives from discovery and decomposition through implementation, release, and operational ownership in complex environments.
- Ability to communicate technical trade-offs, risks, and mitigation options clearly to engineers, PM/AM partners, leadership, and clients.
- Demonstrated success improving measurable engineering outcomes such as cycle time, estimation accuracy, defect escape rate, deployment quality, incident frequency, or mean time to recovery.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in pod-based, product-based, or value-stream-aligned delivery models.
- Background in regulated or high-reliability environments where stability and quality are critical.
- Familiarity with modern observability, incident response, and operational readiness practices.
- Experience leading teams through delivery model or operating model transformations.
- Demonstrated success driving hiring, onboarding, and retention outcomes in engineering organizations.
