The Community Translator serves students and their family across up to three school campuses to make sure language is not a barrier to full participation for community members without full command of the English language. Each school identifies the families/students in need of support to ensure they are able to fully engage in the educational process.
Role Responsibilities:
- Perform oral interpretation during school sponsored meetings.
- Performs written translation of forms, communications, discipline reports, report cards, and related documents. Assists by interpreting for parents and staff the meaning of words and phrases.
- Assists school staff in phoning non-English speaking parents/guardians regarding curriculum homework, matters related to meetings, and/or disciplinary concerns.
- Assists in the administration of tests for non-English speaking students
- Develops lesson materials and plans, identifying students’ needs, and maintaining records for non-English speaking students
- Conducts home-visits when doing so increases the ability of parents to be part of the educational process; and will be accompanied by a school-based employee.
- Follows interpretation/translator professional standards as outlined in the onboarding professional development.
- Participates in ongoing training to keep skills proficient.
- Prepares materials to include worksheets and manipulatives.
Knowledge of:
- Basic differences and structures of the English language system and Pashto/Dari.
- Requires sufficient command of English and second language usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation to prepare professional correspondence and standardized reports.
- Requires some keyboarding skill to perform data entry onto preformatted screens and to compose correspondence at a rate sufficient for successful job performance.
- Requires sufficient human relation skill to communicate technical concepts to others and convey a positive, service oriented image of the school.
- Record keeping methods and requirements as established.
- Safe working practices.
Ability to:
- Interpret and/or translate between Pashto, Dari and English.
- Perform interpretation and/or translation to assist in the development of students’ Individual Education Programs document.
- Perform interpretation and/or translation to assist in the instruction of students, including reading, writing, and math skills.
- Locate, understand, and translate written information in documents, including manuals, textbooks, graphs, and schedules in English, and in a second language.
- Accurately follow an assigned schedule that may change based on student/family/school need.
- Report to assigned work on a timely and consistent basis.
- Be flexible to function in a variety of school and school related settings.
- Follow instructions accurately including written and oral directions.
- Must be able to write correspondence in a professional manner and tactfully communicate in both oral and written forms; communicating thoughts, ideas, information and messages in English and a second language.
- Requires the ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
- Must be able to work effectively as part of a team devoted to serving the students and families of the school community

Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
