The Specialist on Aging will be located in the St. Louis Area Agency on Aging, a division of the Department of Human Services.
Incumbents in this position are responsible for coordinating and monitoring a variety of support programs for the St. Louis Area Agency on Aging (SLAAA) so that older adults can remain independent. Duties include promoting agency programs and referral services; researching and applying for additional resources; monitoring services and contractors and providing technical assistance. Positions require some travel and weekend and evening assignments.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Supports the implementation of all SLAAA programs in the community.
- Monitors and supports special programs and projects administered by SLAAA.
- Provides information and assistance to older adults, caregivers, advocates, and agencies;coordinates referrals to programs that provide assistance.
- Develops training for staff and service providers; monitors performance to determine additional training needs.
- Monitors contracted service providers to ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines; provides written notification of violations.
- Researches, gathers and analyzes demographic, financial and geographic data in order to prepare statistical reports.
- Promotes public awareness of aging programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Data Utilization: Requires the ability to perform basic level of data analysis including the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize and/or reference data, statutes and/or guidelines and/or group, rank, investigate and diagnose. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established standards to recognize interactive effects and relationships.
- Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as coworkers and the public, on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as a personal computer, loudspeaker, motor vehicle, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Verbal Aptitude:Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as monitoring records, press releases, training records, statistical reports, guidelines and non-routine correspondence.
- Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages, and decimals; and may require the ability to utilize principles of fractions and/or interpret graphs.
- Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

- Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as traffic hazards, irate individuals or disease.
- Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects weighing five (5) to ten (10) pounds, such as office supplies.
- Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks, such as making presentations to advocacy groups.
A Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Gerontology, Occupational Therapy, or a related field; OR, four years of experience working with an agency on aging or working in the community health field with senior citizens. OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request. Veterans Preference Points

City Residence Preference Points
City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
