Senior Accountant & Financial Analyst
Position SummaryThe Senior Accountant & Financial Analyst is responsible for overseeing the accounting operations for a portfolio of residential and/or commercial properties while providing financial analysis to support operational and strategic decision-making. This role requires strong technical accounting skills, financial reporting expertise, budgeting experience, and the ability to collaborate across departments.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements for a portfolio of properties, ensuring accuracy and timely reporting. Perform monthly account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and general ledger analysis. Lead month-end and year-end close processes in accordance with established deadlines. Analyze property operating results, identifying budget variances, trends, and opportunities for cost savings. Prepare annual operating budgets and periodic financial forecasts in collaboration with property management teams. Develop financial models and performance metrics to support business planning and investment decisions. Monitor cash flow, operating expenses, capital expenditures, and reserve accounts. Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, lender requirements, and owner reporting standards. Coordinate annual audits, tax preparation, and financial reporting with external auditors and accountants. Review and improve accounting processes and internal controls to increase efficiency and accuracy. Assist with acquisitions, property transitions, and due diligence activities as needed. Prepare reports for property owners, investors, and senior management, providing meaningful financial insights and recommendations. Mentor and support junior accounting staff while promoting best practices and continuous improvement. Collaborate with property managers and operational teams to resolve accounting issues and improve financial performance.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA designation or progress toward CPA preferred. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in property management or real estate. Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles. Experience with property management/accounting software (Yardi, MRI, RealPage, AppFolio, or similar). Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial modeling. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience preparing budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with commercial and/or multifamily real estate accounting. Knowledge of CAM reconciliations, tenant billing, and lease accounting. Familiarity with fixed asset accounting and capital project tracking. Experience working with multiple legal entities and intercompany transactions. Ability to identify process improvements and leverage technology to streamline accounting functions.
