Position Summary
Saint John's School, a Toddler to 12-grade co-ed secular school, seeks a qualified and experienced full-time English teacher to serve as a long-term substitute, effective the first week of August 2026 through November 06, 2026. The position includes teaching English Language Arts 7th & 8th. The teacher will ensure instructional continuity through thoughtful planning, effective assessment practices, and clear communication with students, families, and colleagues.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, Communications, Journalism, Education, or a related field strongly preferred
- Teaching experience, preferably in an independent school setting
- Strong understanding of literary genres, composition, grammar, and rhetoric.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to design and implement Common Core standards-based lesson plans.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to balance academic rigor with an understanding of adolescent development
- Experience differentiating instruction in a college-preparatory environment
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Capacity to foster curiosity, engagement, and language proficiency in students
Teaching & Professional Responsibilities
- Design and implement well-planned, engaging lessons aligned with course objectives
- Assess student learning using multiple approaches, including projects, performance-based tasks, and ongoing feedback
- Maintain accurate student records and communicate regularly with families regarding student progress
- Foster a classroom culture rooted in accountability, belonging, and academic excellence
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues and participate fully in faculty responsibilities
- Uphold and implement school policies, including academic and behavioral expectations
