NCE TutorJob Summary
Deconstruction Counseling is looking for counselors and counselor educators to join our team as paid National Counselor Examination (NCE) tutors. Tutors will work one-on-one with adult counseling students and professionals preparing for the NCE.
This role is focused on helping students understand counseling concepts, apply their knowledge to NCE-style questions, identify areas for improvement, and develop effective study and test-taking strategies. Tutors will use their clinical and counseling knowledge to make difficult material easier to understand and help students feel more prepared for exam day.
This is a flexible, remote tutoring position with the opportunity to work with students at different stages of their NCE preparation.
Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one tutoring for students preparing for the National Counselor Examination (NCE)
- Explain counseling theories, ethics, assessment, human development, research, career development, social and cultural issues, and other NCE-related content
- Help students understand how to approach and analyze NCE-style multiple-choice questions
- Teach practical test-taking strategies, including question analysis, pacing, prioritization, and eliminating incorrect answers
- Identify individual knowledge gaps and tailor tutoring sessions accordingly
- Help students organize their study materials and develop realistic study plans
- Provide clear, constructive feedback and recommendations for continued study
- Use virtual tutoring platforms and digital learning tools to conduct engaging online sessions
- Become familiar with our existing NCE study materials and tutoring approach
- Maintain appropriate documentation related to tutoring sessions and student progress
- Communicate professionally and reliably with students and the Deconstruction Counseling team
Ideal Candidate
We are especially interested in applicants who have firsthand experience with the counseling profession and understand what it takes to prepare for a professional counseling examination.
A personal NCE score of 135 or higher is strongly preferred.
You may also be a good fit if you are:
- An LPC, LMHC, LCMHC, LPCC, NCC, counselor educator, or otherwise experienced counseling professional
- Someone who has successfully passed the NCE and understands the exam from the test-taker's perspective.
- A counselor with strong knowledge of counseling theories and other core counseling concepts
- Experienced in teaching, tutoring, supervision, mentoring, or providing educational support
- Comfortable explaining complicated counseling concepts in plain language
- Familiar with multiple-choice exam strategies and helping students reason through difficult questions
- Comfortable working with adult learners from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds
- Comfortable providing tutoring virtually through video conferencing
- Reliable, organized, and responsive
Skills & Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of professional counseling concepts and terminology
- Strong communication and teaching skills
- Ability to break complex concepts into understandable explanations
- Ability to identify why a student is struggling with a question, rather than simply providing the correct answer
- Familiarity with the NCE or similar counselor licensure examinations
- Strong understanding of counseling theories and theorists
- Comfortable using online technology for tutoring
- Strong professional writing and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage a flexible tutoring schedule
- Technical proficiency with video chat platforms and sharing your screen to virtually teach cirriculum
