Job Title: Assistant Building Inspector

Salary Range: $82,652 - $103,048 annually
Function:
Under the general supervision of the Building Official, establishes and enforces building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and energy code requirements to promote the health and safety of the people of Berlin by reviewing, developing, adopting and administering the State of Connecticut Building Code. Assists in the review of plans and specifications submitted with building permit applications, inspects buildings, structures, plumbing and electrical installations, and enforces the International Building Code. In the absence of the Building Official, serves as the Department authority.
Typical Duties, Responsibilities, Tasks & Assignments:
- Conducts extensive field work performing inspections at various stages of construction. Inspects plumbing, electrical, mechanical and other skilled trades work. Enforcing regulations, ensuring that the work meets code.
- Serves as a resource and helps the public, answering questions regarding building codes, permits, and timelines. Review’s drawings and plans prior to issuing permits. Utilizes the fee schedule to calculate and assign fees required for permits.
- Utilizes the Building Department Online Permit software system. Provides data input into the system as needed.
- Aids the Fire Marshal in the analysis of possible hazardous conditions as well as in the investigation of fires.
- Maintains and observes all safety policies and procedures to ensure safe work conditions and always reduce hazards. Practice’s energy conservation.
- Performs other related duties as assigned. Could be called after hours in case of emergencies.
Special Skills & Requirements:
Certification as an Assistant Building Official is required. Must have a working knowledge of modern practices, principles, materials, tools, techniques and terminology used in building construction; have a working knowledge of inspection practices and techniques, and an understanding of the International Building Code as adopted by the State of Connecticut. Additional basic abilities of using computer software such as spreadsheets, word processing, email, building permit software are also required. Must maintain a valid Driver’s license. Must be prepared and capable of working in inclement weather conditions and other various conditions pertinent with job-site construction.
Physical Requirements:
The work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking over rough or difficult surfaces, recurring stooping, climbing ladders and or scaffold, recurring stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and balancing on various surface areas. Lifting moderately heavy items weighing less than 25 pounds and may require occasional lifting of objects weighing more than 25 pounds. The work may require specific, but common physical characteristics and abilities such as mobility and dexterity. The work involves moderate risks or discomforts, which require special safety precautions. The employee may be required to use protective clothing or equipment such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, gloves or shield. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distant vision, color vision, and depth perception. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate various pieces of office equipment.
