Medical Billing Assistant (Part-Time, Hybrid)

Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Medical Billing Assistant to join our small, patient-centered psychological private practice. This position plays a vital role in ensuring timely insurance reimbursement while providing excellent customer service to our clients.
The ideal candidate has experience with medical billing, insurance verification, claims management, and enjoys working independently in a flexible, collaborative environment. Experience with behavioral health or mental health billing is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Submit electronic and paper insurance claims accurately and promptly.
- Monitor and follow up on unpaid, denied, or outstanding insurance claims.
- Contact insurance companies to reconcile claims, resolve billing issues, and obtain claim status updates.
- Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits prior to services.
- Obtain and manage Employee Assistance Program (EAP) authorizations and ensure required documentation is current.
- Communicate with clients to obtain or update insurance information and explain billing-related questions professionally and compassionately.
- Review explanation of benefits (EOBs) and post insurance payments accurately.
- Identify billing discrepancies and work toward timely resolution.
- Maintain accurate patient billing records while ensuring HIPAA compliance.
- Collaborate with providers and administrative staff to support efficient practice operations.
- Assist with additional billing and administrative tasks as needed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of medical billing experience (behavioral health or mental health preferred).
- Knowledge of medical insurance plans, claim submission, payment posting, and denial management.
- Experience verifying insurance benefits and obtaining prior authorizations/EAP authorizations.
- Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10, and behavioral health billing practices.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
- Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR), practice management software, and Microsoft Office or Google Workspace.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a psychological, counseling, or behavioral health private practice.
- Knowledge of commercial insurance plans, Medicare, and managed care billing.
- Familiarity with telehealth billing guidelines.
