POSITION SUMMARY
The Leadership, Advocacy & Gender-Based Violence Prevention Instructor delivers an innovative, year-long course developed collaboratively by various school districts and the YWCA Central West Michigan. This position engages middle/high school students in understanding social-emotional leadership, healthy relationships, and the prevention of gender-based violence (GBV). The instructor promotes student voice, critical thinking, and advocacy skills that contribute to safer, more equitable school communities.
This role is key in advancing the YWCA’s mission to eliminate racism and empower women through education and community partnership, while supporting GRPS priorities in equity, student wellness, and positive school culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Instruction & Facilitation
- Deliver the Leadership, Advocacy & Gender-Based Violence Prevention curriculum with fidelity and creativity.
- Employ trauma-informed, student-centered, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
- Facilitate discussions that promote respect, empathy, consent, and critical reflection without requiring personal disclosure.
- Student Empowerment
- Guide students in developing social-emotional competencies (aligned with CASEL standards).
- Support the design and implementation of student-led advocacy or prevention projects that impact the school or community.
- Foster leadership, media literacy, and civic responsibility in each learner.
- Collaboration
- Partner closely with YWCA and GRPS staff to ensure alignment with school goals and community prevention strategies.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional learning opportunities in GBV prevention, youth empowerment, and equity-focused teaching.
- Maintain strong communication with school administrators and the YWCA prevention team.
- Evaluation & Reporting
- Track student engagement, outcomes, and project progress using YWCA and GRPS reporting tools.
- Contribute to the overall evaluation of the program’s impact and sustainability.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, Social Work, Psychology, Gender Studies, or a related field (master's preferred).
- Experience teaching or facilitating youth programs, preferably in topics related to health education, social justice, or leadership.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed and inclusive education practices.
- Strong commitment to gender equity, anti-racism, and youth empowerment.
- Skilled in collaborative communication and reflective facilitation.
Work Environment
- Classroom-based setting within GRPS; regular interaction with students, school personnel, and YWCA staff.
- Some flexibility required for special events, project presentations, or professional development sessions.
