NOTE: Educator Certification for Athletic Coaching Legislative Update - On March 22, 2024, Governor DeSantis signed
House Bill 865 amending Section 1012.55, Florida Statutes, which became effective on July 1, 2024. House Bill 865 makes an important change for individuals with 3-year and 5-year athletic coaching certificates. In addition to the existing requirement of certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, in order to be employed as an athletic coach in a public school, these certificate holders must now maintain certification in first aid and the use of an automated external defibrillator. The certification must be consistent with national evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care guidelines.
Beginning July 1, 2024, all current athletic coaching certificate holders who are employed in a public school and render service as an athletic coach must complete these trainings.
