Position Overview
The Maysville Public Library is seeking a friendly, dependable, and customer-focused Part-Time Library Assistant to support the daily operations of the library. This position provides excellent service to patrons of all ages while assisting with circulation, shelving, technology support, library programs, and maintaining an organized, welcoming environment.
The ideal candidate is self-motivated, enjoys working with the public, is comfortable using technology, and thrives in a collaborative team setting.
Schedule
The selected candidate must be available to work the following schedule:
- Wednesday: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
- Thursday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- First Wednesday of each month: 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM (Outreach Program)
- Occasional Saturdays as scheduled.
Some scheduling accommodations may be considered; however, availability during these core hours is required.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Patron Services
Provide outstanding customer service by assisting patrons with:
- Registering new library users and updating accounts using the PINES/Evergreen library system.
- Checking library materials in and out through the Evergreen circulation system.
- Offering readers' advisory services using both print and digital collections.
- Assisting patrons with computers, tablets, printers, and other library technology.
Library Operations
Help ensure efficient daily operations by:
- Assisting with opening and closing procedures.
- Performing regular shelf reading and maintaining proper organization using the Dewey Decimal System and special shelving collections.
- Sorting, shelving, and organizing returned library materials.
- Preparing and packing materials for courier pickup.
- Receiving courier deliveries and processing incoming materials.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with planning, developing, and implementing library programs.
- Create engaging book displays and promotional materials.
- Maintain clean, organized, and welcoming public spaces.
- Assist with library social media and community outreach efforts.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support library operations.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and common desktop and tablet applications.
- Ability to learn library software and procedures.
Preferred
- Post-secondary education or coursework in office administration, library science, or a related field.
- Previous experience in customer service, libraries, education, or administrative support.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, including book crates and courier bins.
- Ability to bend, reach, stand, and move throughout the library for extended periods.
