Position Summary:
The General Manager will serve as the highest-ranking operational leader within the company, driving organizational effectiveness and long-term growth. This role requires a seasoned executive with a strong background in business management, operations, financial oversight, human resources, customer relations, sales, marketing, and administrative leadership. The role will own the P&L for the portfolio business. The General Manager will play a pivotal role in shaping future product advancements through collaboration with the development team. Based in Phoenix, the ideal candidate will inherit a well-established company with a loyal customer base and a high contract renewal rate (98%+). They will be responsible for safeguarding the company’s outstanding reputation, ensuring continued client retention, and identifying new growth opportunities. The General Manager must demonstrate exceptional leadership and people management skills to foster a high-performing team and uphold the company’s strategic vision. The company operates with a small, close-knit team of seven people, making strong leadership and team dynamics essential for success.
Key Responsibilities:
Business Operations & Management
- Oversee day-to-day business operations, ensuring efficiency and alignment with company goals.
- Manage staff schedules, task prioritization, and leave approvals.
- Conduct weekly team meetings to review priorities, resolve operational issues, and coordinate business development initiatives.
- Ensure timely follow-up on customer billing and support issues.
- Maintain full P&L responsibility and executive oversight of financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, financial reporting, and accounting functions.
- Oversee the company's insurance, employee benefits, workers' compensation, and risk management programs.
- Build and manage relationships with external advisors and service providers, including accounting, tax, legal, insurance, benefits, payroll, and technology partners.
- Lead hiring, onboarding, compensation planning, performance management, organizational structure decisions, employee development, and succession planning.
- Provide leadership on employee relations, policy implementation, and organizational culture.
Customer & Client Relations
- Serve as the primary point of contact for high-level customer interactions.
- Review customer support logs to ensure prompt and effective issue resolution.
- Oversee client check-in meetings, ensuring that customer concerns are addressed and relationships are strengthened.
- Lead annual review and appraisal processes for staff.
- Review and approve customer-specific pricing exceptions, non-standard commercial terms, contract exceptions, and strategic customer retention initiatives.
- Oversee executive-level customer communications, Software License Agreements, RFP/RFQ responses, and major customer negotiations.
Sales & Marketing Leadership
- Drive sales initiatives, including direct sales activities, proposal responses, and participation in industry conferences.
- Develop marketing strategies to promote the company’s products and services.
- Ensure effective communication with clients and stakeholders regarding service updates, new offerings, and industry trends.
- Coordinate with sales staff on pricing quotes and contract negotiations.
- Lead the company's conference, sponsorship, marketing, and industry engagement strategy, including oversight of related budgets and participation decisions.
Compliance & Strategic Planning
- Ensure adherence to company policies and regulatory requirements related to data security, privacy, and operational compliance.
- Liaise with state agencies and legislators as needed to advocate for the company’s interests.
- Oversee business development and strategic initiatives to drive growth.
- Lead long-term planning, business development, and corporate strategy to drive company growth.
- Lead product roadmap prioritization and collaborate with technical leadership on major product initiatives, technology strategy, integrations, and emerging AI initiatives.
- Review and approve major software, infrastructure, hosting, and operational technology initiatives.
- Oversee corporate agreements, including Software License Agreements, vendor agreements, office lease matters, and other corporate documents requiring executive approval.
- Coordinate with external advisors on tax filings, insurance renewals, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance matters.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Proven experience in a senior management or general management role, preferably within a SaaS, education, or technology-related industry.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for customer engagement and staff leadership.
- Business acumen with expertise in operations, financial oversight, and sales/marketing strategies.
- Experience managing cross-functional business operations including finance, human resources, customer success, contracts, compliance, vendor management, and strategic planning.
- Familiarity with the education sector and software industry is a plus.
- Special education knowledge and experience is highly valued, but if the candidate lacks this, it can be overcome with a strong willingness to learn and quickly become a domain expert.
- Ability to navigate and manage relationships with government agencies and industry stakeholders.
