POSITION DESCRIPTION
PATIENT ACCESS REP
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The patient access rep may be asked to perform all or a portion of the following duties: scheduling of surgical procedures, reception of patients, insurance verification, accounts payable coordination, and medical records in accordance with facility policies. Patient access rep is able to perform all duties in accordance with facility policies, procedures, philosophy and objectives.
POSITION REPORTS TO: Administrator
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS: Demonstrates cooperative work attitude toward and with employees, management, patients, families, visitors, physicians, contract-service providers, payors and vendors. Consistently interacts in a manner that is friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative and professional.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS: None required, strongly suggest anatomy, and medical terminology knowledge.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High school graduate required, college or technical education preferred with aptitude in math, bookkeeping and accounting. One – two years’ experience in medical business office preferred.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be able to provide proof of identity and right to work in the United States.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:
- Acting as a resource person and a problem-solver.
- OR scheduling.
- Patient reception, registration and admission.
- Coordinates input of patient insurance and demographic information, i.e. pre-registration, registration.
- Oversees/performs pre-verification of third party benefits, including determination of whether deductible has been met, and how much co-payment the patient will owe prior to surgery.
- Notifies patients of their financial responsibility prior to surgery.
- Discusses payment expectations with patient and determines method of payment prior to admission.
- Meets with patient in private if patient is unprepared to pay on admission
JOB COMPLEXITY, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Must be able to handle multiple, simultaneous tasks effectively and efficiently while maintaining a professional, courteous manner. Must be able to handle patient, employee or visitor confrontations in a positive manner. Must be able to process patient and public inquiries with poise and efficiency. Requires ability to recognize, evaluate, solve problems, and correct errors. Must be able to take directions from multiple sources.
LEVEL OF SUPERVISION: Minimal. Must be self-directed and able to work independently. Must be able to follow a schedule and manage one’s own time.
PROBLEM SOLVING AND JUDGEMENT: Able to read, write and communicate effectively with co-workers, patients, and all other customers. Must be able to determine priorities and establish processes that ensure customer satisfaction, prompt billing, and accurate payments.
PROFESSIONAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Knowledge and proficiency in use of computers, including internet access.
COMPETENCY / SKILLS REVIEW: Satisfactorily completes skills review as new hire and annually thereafter.
TEAM WORK: Must be able to work with various personalities and age groups in a positive non-confrontational manner
ATTENDANCE: Observes scheduled hours of work and puts in extra hours if needed. Excellent attendance required
MACHINES / EQUIPMENT USED: Computer, calculator, fax, copy machine, telephone, and security system.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Works in well-lighted and ventilated climate-controlled environment with complicated equipment, some equipment with moving mechanical parts.
- Quiet to moderate noise levels.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Requires extensive mobility: walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
2. Ability to sit for long periods of time.
3. Requires mental alertness and accuracy for decision making.
4. Requires ability to speak, hear, and to identify and distinguish colors.
5. Use of hands to reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel fine sensation to temperature, texture, size and shape
6. Repetitive motion required for extensive use of computers
7. Good visual acuity.
8. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
DEGREE OF SUPERVISION PROVIDED TO POSITION: Minimal supervision must be self directed and able to work independently. Reports to Facility Administrator
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
