Position Summary
The Fitter/Welder is responsible for laying out, fitting, and welding structural steel members in accordance with shop drawings, welding procedures, and Garrison Steel’s Quality Management System (QMS). This role ensures fabricated components meet project specifications, applicable codes, and company quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Fit-Up & Layout
- Read and interpret shop drawings, erection drawings, and cut lists
- Accurately lay out structural members (beams, columns, bracing, misc. steel)
- Perform proper fit-up of connections, including bolted and welded assemblies
- Verify dimensions, alignment, and tolerances prior to welding
Welding
- Perform welding in accordance with approved WPS and AWS D1.1 requirements
- Execute fillet welds, groove welds, and other required weld types
- Maintain weld quality, proper preheat (when required), and interpass control
- Identify and correct weld defects before QC inspection
Quality & Compliance
- Follow all Garrison Steel QMS procedures for fabrication and inspection
- Ensure work meets project specifications and applicable codes
- Perform self-checks prior to QC inspection
- Maintain traceability of materials and assemblies as required
Shop Operations
- Operate shop equipment safely (fit-up tables, welding machines, torches, grinders)
- Assist with material handling and staging of assemblies
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Support production flow and schedule priorities
Required Qualifications
- Experience in structural steel fabrication, fitting, and welding
- Ability to read and interpret structural steel shop drawings
- Proficiency with FCAW and/or SMAW processes
- Working knowledge of welding symbols and fabrication practices
- Ability to use measuring tools (tape, square, level, etc.) accurately
Preferred Qualifications
- AWS D1.1 welder certification
- Experience with heavy structural steel and complex assemblies
- Familiarity with AISC fabrication practices and tolerances
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, and move steel components and tools
- Capable of standing, bending, kneeling, and working in shop conditions
- Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment
Work Environment
- Indoor fabrication shop with exposure to noise, welding arc, and steel handling operations
- Use of PPE required (gloves, safety glasses, etc.)
Quality Expectations
- Work must comply with Garrison Steel’s Fabrication Process Control and Inspection procedures
- Emphasis on “fit it right before welding” to minimize rework
- Maintain production efficiency without compromising quality

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
