Land Development Engineering Internship Program | Roanoke
Interns gain exposure to the full project lifecycle—from field data collection through engineering design—while working directly alongside licensed engineers and experienced professionals. Students with an interest in land development-focused coursework, including those participating in programs such as Virginia Tech’s Land Development Design Initiative (LDDI), are especially encouraged to apply.
COMPENSATION
- Competitive hourly rate: $25–$30 per hour, based on experience and academic level
- Paid internship with structured mentorship and exposure to real projects and clients
While compensation is competitive for the region, the true value of this internship lies in the depth of practical experience, direct mentorship, and meaningful project involvement that prepare students for long-term success in land development engineering.
PROGRAM DURATION & SCHEDULE
- Primary Term: Mid-April through late August
- Total Commitment: Approximately 240 hours
- Flexible schedule coordinated around academic and project needs
- Opportunity for continued part-time employment during fall and spring semesters (based on performance)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & PROFESSIONAL EXPOSURE
Field & Survey Experience:
- Assist survey crews in field operations
- Observe boundary, topographic, and construction surveying
- Participate in stormwater and utility assessments
- Develop understanding of site constraints and regulatory considerations
Engineering & Design Support:
- Assist with site layout, grading, and drainage concepts
- Support stormwater design calculations and modeling
- Assist with utility layout and coordination
- Exposure to AutoCAD and Civil 3D workflows
- Attend internal project meetings and site visits
- Receive structured mentorship and professional feedback
