Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly skilled Medical Billing and Coding Specialist to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of medical billing procedures, coding systems, and healthcare documentation standards. In this role, you will be responsible for accurately coding medical procedures and diagnoses, managing billing processes, and ensuring timely reimbursement from insurance providers. Your expertise will contribute to the smooth operation of our medical office and support optimal patient care delivery through precise record-keeping and billing practices.
Duties
- Review and interpret medical records to assign appropriate ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), and DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group) codes for diagnoses and procedures.
- Prepare and submit accurate claims using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems to insurance companies, government agencies, and patients.
- Follow up on unpaid or denied claims through effective medical collection strategies while maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations.
- Ensure all billing activities adhere to current coding standards, including ICD coding updates and CPT coding guidelines.
- Maintain detailed and organized medical records, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify documentation for accurate coding and billing purposes.
- Stay current with industry changes related to medical terminology, coding updates, and billing regulations to optimize reimbursement processes.
Experience
- Proven experience in medical billing, coding, or a related healthcare administrative role within a medical office environment.
- Strong knowledge of ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT coding systems, as well as DRG classifications used in hospital billing.
- Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems for efficient data entry and claim processing.
- Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and healthcare documentation standards.
- Experience handling medical records management and ensuring compliance with privacy laws such as HIPAA.
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to accurately interpret complex medical information.
- Prior experience in medical collection processes is advantageous but not mandatory.
