The Traffic Control Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily traffic control operations for utility, telecommunications, and construction projects. This role ensures the safe and efficient movement of motorists, pedestrians, and crews through active work zones while maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal traffic control regulations. The Traffic Control Supervisor leads field personnel, coordinates project logistics, conducts safety inspections, and serves as the primary point of contact for traffic control-related activities on assigned projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate traffic control crews on multiple job sites and remotely
- Ensure all traffic control setups comply with MUTCD standards and company safety policies
- Review traffic control plans and verify proper implementation in the field
- Conduct daily job site inspections to ensure safe work zones and proper device placement
- Train, mentor, and evaluate Traffic Control Technicians and Flaggers
- Schedule crews, equipment, and materials to support project timelines
- Coordinate with project managers, utility crews, subcontractors, and local agencies
- Maintain accurate documentation including daily reports, incident reports, and equipment logs
- Respond to and resolve field issues, emergencies, or traffic-related concerns promptly
- Monitor inventory and ensure traffic control devices and equipment are maintained and compliant
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure adherence to OSHA and company safety standards
- Participate in pre-construction meetings and site walkthroughs as needed
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum 3–5 years of traffic control or roadway construction experience required
- Minimum of one year of Supervisory experience required
- Previous supervisory or crew lead experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of MUTCD guidelines and work zone safety practices
- Ability to read and interpret traffic control plans and construction drawings
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Proficient in problem-solving and decision-making in fast-paced field environments
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and physically demanding environments
- Flexible schedule with the ability to work nights, weekends, and overtime as needed
Certifications & Requirements
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required
- Flagger certification required
- ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) certification required [MM2]
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time required
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred
- CDL preferred but not required
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds regularly
- Ability to work near active roadways and heavy equipment safely
- Must be able to wear required PPE at all times on job sites
