About the Role
We are seeking a proactive Oncology Authorization Coordinator to manage outbound referrals, radiology prior authorizations, and pathology/genomic testing authorizations, with minimal pharmacy-related coordination. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and able to work collaboratively with clinical teams to prevent any delays in patient care.
Responsibilities
- Submit and track prior authorizations for:
- Outbound referrals
- Radiology/Imaging (CT, MRI, PET, Ultrasound)
- Pathology and genetic/biomarker testing (e.g., Tempus, Caris, FoundationOne)
- Submit chemotherapy and injection authorizations as needed
- Coordinate with specialty pharmacies for prescription routing when applicable
- Work closely with providers, nurses, and scheduling teams to ensure timely care coordination
- Process referral approvals and send to authorized/contracted facilities
- Clearly communicate authorization status, approvals, and next steps with staff and patients
Experience
- 1–2 years of medical prior authorization experience required
(Oncology, primary care, or specialty clinic experience acceptable)
- Experience submitting radiology authorizations to managed care plans/IPAs/ PPO and Medi-cal
- Familiarity with pathology and genomic testing authorization workflows
Knowledge & Skills
- Understanding of:
- CPT codes for radiology and pathology services
- In-network vs. out-of-network facility routing
- Referral coordination to contracted imaging centers and labs
- Ability to review provider orders and clinical notes to determine authorization requirements
- Strong follow-up, tracking, and documentation skills
- Able to communicate authorization status clearly to clinical and scheduling teams
Soft Skills
- Highly organized and detail-oriented
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Able to work independently and manage multiple requests efficiently
- Comfortable communicating professionally with physicians and clinical staff
- Problem-solving mindset (not just sending requests, but closing the loop)
Preferred (Not Required)
- Prior experience in an Oncology clinic setting
- Experience working with PPO / HMO / Medi-Cal plans (including TARs)
