Construction Manager
Position Overview
The Construction Manager is responsible for managing the Layfield USA Geosynthetics construction team. The position ensures that management control systems, personnel, equipment, materials, and other resources are available as necessary for each of Layfield’s construction operations to plan and execute all activities while exceeding minimum performance expectations in the areas of safety, quality, cost, and customer satisfaction. In addition, the Construction Manager will lead the overall culture within the construction operation, ensuring high levels of excellence in all areas.
Key Responsibilities
Safety:
· Responsible for leading the Safety culture within the construction operations team to support the division’s goal of zero safety incidents.
· Develop and implement Safety programs
· Maintain and continuously improve the division’s Safety manual for the construction operations team.
· Ensures that effective safety management systems, controls, and training are in place to meet local and customer requirements.
Leadership:
· Provide cultural leadership within the construction department to align with Layfield’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
· Ensure that a high level of ethical standards is maintained.
· Develop the internal talent to support future growth plans.
· Work with the leadership team to review new opportunities to ensure alignment between sales, estimating, and operations.
· Be an industry leader in Geosynthetics – Construction installations.
· Stay informed and communicate any outside influences that can affect the success of the division.
Construction Operations Management:
· Lead the construction operations team to execute all construction projects to meet or exceed expected financial performance.
· Manage construction teams to ensure that scope changes are managed through the change order process.
· Develop and implement project management methodology across the construction team.
· Manage the construction asset portfolio to ensure effective use.
· Lead the construction teams to ensure customer satisfaction through on-time completion, proactive cost controls, priority management, and excellence in quality.
· Ensures the systems and resources are available and utilized to control design and engineering processes and output in accordance with applicable legislation.
Planning, Budgeting & Reporting:
· Prepare Construction Operations annual business plans and budgets.
· Prepare and deliver quarterly management reports and presentations on the status of operations.
· Regularly monitor performance against plans & budgets and ensure goals are achieved.
· Support the Layfield bid review process, ensuring the process is conducted for all bids and that bid evaluations are thorough and accurate.
· Ensure contract documents are reviewed and terms are acceptable to Layfield prior to execution of Contracts.
· Ensures changes in contract conditions are properly documented with customer site representative.
· Confers with Sales to optimize bidding strategy, margins, and negotiations with customers to meet business plan objectives.
Human Resources:
· Using the Layfield Talent Management System, ensure all team members receive the performance reviews.
· Manage the Construction Operations Progression system is current and effectively executed within the team.
· Ensures all employees are challenged, rewarded, and developed to their utmost potential.
- Monitors and participates in the recruitment process for all construction operations personnel to ensure a high standard of employees.
Education & Experience
Degree or equivalent experience: Post-secondary Degree or Diploma relating to engineering, construction, or environmental technology
o Minimum of 10 years experience managing construction teams in a contracting environment
o at least 10 years experience in the capacity of a Project Manager.
- Active affiliations: Post-secondary training and accreditation in management of construction safety preferred, Certified CM, or PMP
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
· Superior knowledge and experience in the Geomembrane industry
- Above average skills in Troubleshooting and problem-solving as well as organization and time management
- Excellent skills in Employee motivation and individual performance development
- Excellent skills in Communication which allows for effective communication (both oral and written) of complex technical issues to individuals across all departments
- Excellent skills in building and maintaining customer relations
- Excellent skills in Negotiations
- Demonstrated ability to Multi-task and maintain progress on multiple concurrent assignments
Working Conditions
The position is based in an office environment but will also include typical construction sites. Office workers usually work indoors, away from the elements. The Construction Manager will have to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers. They may also have to do some light lifting of supplies and materials from time to time. The job requires speaking to express ideas, give direction, and communicate with co-workers and customers. Travel is required to site on a regular basis to attend Construction Management meetings with customer as well as review of Operations team.
Pay: $130,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
