Automation Engineer (Controls & SCADA)

$100,000–$140,000 per year + full benefits
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
We're working with an established engineering firm that designs and delivers custom control and automation systems across industrial and municipal sectors. Continued growth means they're adding to their controls engineering team in the Roanoke, VA area. This is an on-site role suited to an engineer who wants varied, hands-on project work — design through commissioning — rather than the same system on repeat.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Design, program and troubleshoot PLC and SCADA-based control systems
- Develop HMI/SCADA interfaces using industry-standard platforms (e.g. Ignition, Wonderware, FactoryTalk)
- Carry out on-site commissioning, testing and startup of control systems
- Work alongside project managers, panel builders and field technicians to deliver fully integrated projects
- Analyse and improve existing systems for performance, efficiency and safety
- Support project planning, estimation and specification development
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Minimum 5 years' hands-on experience in controls or automation engineering
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, automation technology or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Strong PLC programming skills across Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider or similar
- SCADA/HMI development experience
- Solid grasp of industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, etc.)
- Experience with process control, instrumentation and field integration
- Willingness to travel locally and regionally (up to ~20%, including occasional overnight stays)
- Valid US driver's license
