Overview
The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides direct care and support to individuals receiving treatment for substance use disorders in a residential or outpatient setting. The BHT works as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment while assisting clients in their recovery process.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision and support to clients in accordance with treatment plans
- Monitor client behavior, safety, and well-being throughout shifts
- Conduct regular safety checks, including room searches and contraband monitoring
- Facilitate or assist with psychoeducational groups and recreational activities
- Document client behaviors, incidents, and progress in accordance with facility policies and regulatory standards
- Assist clients with daily living activities (e.g., hygiene, meals, routines)
- Support clients in crisis situations using de-escalation techniques
- Enforce program rules, structure, and boundaries consistently and professionally
- Perform admission and discharge procedures, including orientation to facility policies
- Conduct drug screenings (urine analysis, breathalyzer testing) as required
- Transport clients to appointments or activities, if applicable
- Communicate effectively with clinical staff regarding client needs and concerns
- Participate in team meetings and shift reports
QualificationsEducation & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or related field preferred
- Previous experience in behavioral health, substance use treatment, or residential care strongly preferred
Certifications (may be required depending on facility)
- CPR/First Aid certification
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) or other de-escalation training
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record (if transportation duties required)
Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour
