Position Summary
The Worship Leader helps create meaningful, engaging, and Spirit-filled worship by
leading congregational singing, coordinating worship music, and offering musical
leadership that supports the mission and ministry of the church. This person should be a
strong vocalist, confident musician, and energetic worship leader who can lead both
contemporary worship music and traditional hymns. The Worship Leader should select
music that reflects the grace-filled, inclusive, and Christ-centered witness of the United
Methodist tradition.
Primary Responsibilities
The Worship Leader will:
- Lead music during worship services, including contemporary Christian music and hymns from United Methodist worship resources provided by the church.
- Sing confidently and clearly in a way that encourages congregational participation.
- Play at least one musical instrument, such as a piano or keyboard.
- Work with the pastor during the week to select and prepare music that supports the Scripture, sermon theme, and overall tone of worship.
- Learn and teach new music.
- Help develop, encourage, and support volunteer musicians and vocalists.
- Lead a required midweek rehearsal or Sunday after-service rehearsal.
- Arrive prepared and on time for Sunday morning rehearsal at 9:15 a.m.
- Communicate clearly and work collaboratively with the pastor, office administrator, church staff, and music volunteers.
- Maintain a spirit of teamwork, flexibility, and pastoral sensitivity.
- Ensure appropriate musical coverage is arranged for vacation, sick days, and other absences, communicating plans with the pastor in advance whenever possible.
- Use Proclaim (church program) to input, edit, and prepare all music slides each week, completing them by Wednesday so the Office Manager can prepare bulletins.
- Work with outside bands, musicians, or vocalists for scheduled concerts or special music as needed.
- Provide music leadership for major worship services, including Christmas, Easter, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and/or Good Friday. If additional paid vocalists or musicians are needed, approval must come from the pastor and the finance chair.
Qualifications
The Worship Leader should have:
- Strong vocal ability and confidence leading congregational singing.
- Ability to play a musical instrument, preferably piano, while leading worship.
- Familiarity with both contemporary Christian worship music and traditional hymns.
- An understanding of United Methodist theology, worship practices, and the importance of grace, inclusion, discipleship, and congregational participation.
- Ability to lead rehearsals and help others grow musically.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- A willingness to work collaboratively with church leadership and volunteers.
- Ability to undergo a background check and Live Scan.
Preferred Skills
- Experience leading worship in a church setting or other venue.
- Ability to arrange or adapt music for different musicians and vocalists.
- Familiarity with church worship traditions, hymns, liturgy, and sacraments, or willingness to learn.
- Comfort leading a variety of musical styles and helping create a blended worship experience.
- Degree in music, progress toward a music degree, or equivalent experience. Students may apply.

The Worship Leader should be dependable, prepared, spiritually grounded, energetic,
flexible, and encouraging. This person should understand that worship leadership is not
just a job but is vital to the church’s growth and worship experience. The goal is to help
the congregation worship God with joy, sincerity, theological integrity, and participation.
Pay: $37.00 per hour
Work Location: In person
