Part-Time Boat Captain
Responsible for the safe opera琀椀on and maintenance of the ELC pontoon boat and taking registered
guests on boat tours.
Detailed Du琀椀es and Responsibili琀椀es:
- Ensures passenger safety at all 琀椀mes.
- Operate vessel in a safe manner, exercising courtesy to passengers and other boaters.
- Ensure that all vessels are safe, U.S. Coast Guard compliant and clean at all 琀椀mes.
- Maintain fuel level allowing for plenty of reserve to complete tour(s).
- Perform minor maintenance/repairs to vessels, boat li昀琀 and dock as needed.
- Launch and retrieve pontoon boat using a boat li昀琀.
- Follow designated routes for each tour o昀昀ered.
- Collaborate with Guest Services Specialist and Volunteer Coordinator to address weather concerns,
cancella琀椀ons, and guide sta昀케ng.
- Report any safety/mechanical de昀椀ciencies immediately to the Manager of Facili琀椀es
- Backup other part-琀椀me Boat Captains
Educa琀椀on, Cer琀椀昀椀ca琀椀ons Required
- Valid US Coast Guard Captains Master’s License (minimum 25 ton), Valid CPR/1st Aid cer琀椀昀椀ca琀椀on, will be added
to ELC’s APCA Consor琀椀um.

- Command ELC pontoon boat in various bodies of water - Indian River Lagoon, St Sebas琀椀an River, and C 54 canal.
- Operate and maintain motor, boat li昀琀, 昀椀re ex琀椀nguishers, and life preservers.
- Keep log.
- Work with sta昀昀 and volunteer naturalists and volunteer 昀椀rst mates (observers).
- Work with ELC Facili琀椀es Manager in general maintenance of dock, li昀琀s, and boat.

Hours
Es琀椀mated 8–16 hours per week, varying by season with typically higher number of hours during winter months,
including evenings and weekends.
