Job Overview
The Mortgage Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day accounting operations of the mortgage company, ensuring the accuracy of financial records, reconciliations, reporting, and compliance with accounting standards and mortgage industry regulations. This role works closely with Finance, Operations, Secondary Marketing, Payroll, and Human Resources to maintain accurate financial data and support month-end and year-end closing activities.
Responsibilities and Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
General Accounting
- Prepare and maintain journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Reconcile bank accounts, warehouse lines of credit, escrow accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.
- Analyze general ledger activity and investigate discrepancies.
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
Mortgage Accounting
- Reconcile loan funding activity, warehouse bank transactions, and loan sales.
- Monitor mortgage-related clearing and suspense accounts.
- Assist with accounting for mortgage servicing rights (MSRs), commissions, and investor remittances as applicable.
- Review loan production reports and reconcile to accounting records.
- Support branch accounting and commission calculations.
- Assist with tracking and recording loan fees, investor income, and secondary market transactions.
Accounts Payable & Payroll Support
- Review invoices and expense reports for accuracy and proper coding.
- Assist with accounts payable processing and vendor management.
- Support payroll reconciliations and benefit-related accounting entries.
- Monitor employee reimbursements and corporate credit card transactions.
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Assist with annual audits, tax filings, and regulatory examinations.
- Prepare supporting schedules and documentation requested by auditors and regulators.
- Maintain organized accounting records and documentation.
Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting procedures and internal controls.
- Assist in developing and documenting accounting policies and workflows.
- Support implementation and optimization of accounting and mortgage banking systems.
Qualifications
Education
· Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
Experience
- 2–5 years of accounting experience required.
- Mortgage banking, financial services, or lending industry experience preferred.
- Experience with warehouse lending, loan accounting, or mortgage servicing accounting is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial analysis.
- Experience with accounting software and ERP systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in mortgage lending, mortgage servicing, or secondary marketing accounting.
- Familiarity with warehouse line reconciliations and loan funding processes.
- Experience with payroll and commission accounting.
- Knowledge of mortgage industry regulations and reporting requirements.
