JOB An employee in this class performs a variety of tasks in the repair, maintenance and construction of public works infrastructure and facilities, and performs other related work as required. The employee operates large, complex equipment such as tracked loader, backhoe, tracked hydraulic excavator to perform operations such as excavating and backfilling, places heavy pipes and similar operations associated with construction and maintenance. Work involves responding to on-site customer complaints regarding water or sewer service; preparing daily records and reports for state inspections; performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment, requesting major repairs and servicing of equipment. The employee performs heavy physical activity doing snow removal, clean-up and maintenance activities for the water/sewer repair in emergency situations, and assists with water leaks and sewer problems. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and policies. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and normal hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as exposure to heat and cold. Work is performed under the supervision of the Water and Sewer Supervisor and is evaluated through daily observation, visual inspection and recordkeeping. This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Inspects and/or repairs reservoir, meters, streets, drainage systems and sewer system to insure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.

Responds to emergency call-outs to clean-up and repair sewer line breaks, stoppages and flooding.

Uses jackhammer and hand tools to expose broken water and sewer mains and service lines; repairs leaks in mains and service lines, and replaces broken lines.

Operates heavy equipment such as trucks with vacuum, skip loader, backhoe and heavy dump truck; operates dump trucks, front end loaders and specialized vehicles to remove and replace excavated material.

Cleans clogged storm drain basins.

Uses, cleans and maintains a variety of power equipment, tools and vehicles required for the work.

Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, and maintenance activity for state inspections.

Performs related duties as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Work in this class is described as moderately strenuous using a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects and may occasionally require some physical exertion to complete tasks. An employee must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. An employee must possess the visual acuity to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes and other equipment. The employee is subject to both environmental conditions inside and outside. The employee is subject to hazards, occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risks of electrical shock, oils and vibration.
