Job description
The primary responsibility of a veterinary assistant is to work with the licensed veterinary technician in preparing cats and dogs for the veterinarian performing surgery. This position also includes working on our mobile clinic, 1-2 days per week. On our mobile clinic it is cats only. Job tasks include:
Patient Care (80%)
· Assist veterinary technician with sedating and preparing cats and dogs for surgery.
o properly restraining dogs and cats for sedation.
o shaving and sterilizing surgery area.
o connecting to oxygen and monitoring equipment before the veterinarian begins surgery.
· Working and clearly communicating with the surgery team to monitor and identify any abnormal conditions.
· Able to work with multiple animals simultaneously in a fast-paced surgery environment.
· Perform general duties in the operating room during surgery, assisting with movement of patients and general flow.
o Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds or more repeatedly throughout the day. (including lifting and moving potentially dangerous domestic and non-domesticated animals in stressful conditions)
o May also need to lift and carry over 50 pounds with either help from staff or with equipment as needed. (examples: large oxygen tanks, large animal handling).
o Must be able to bend, crawl, climb, reach overhead, kneel, balance and work standing for 10 or more hours to meet the physical demands of this position.
Daily Operations & Communication (10%)
· Responsible for intake of cat patients in the morning.
o Reviewing client paperwork and communicating with clients regarding patient health.
o Transferring cats from client containers to surgery-appropriate ones if needed.
· Assist veterinary technician with discharge of patients at the end of the day.
Cleaning & Maintenance (10%)
· Work with discharge staff on cleaning surgery room and dog kennels at the end of the day.
· Communicate with veterinary assistant to replenish supplies as needed.
Pay: From $20.00 per hour

- High school or equivalent (Required)
