Who we’re looking for
Toyota’s Hazmat Transportation & Compliance Team is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Senior Hazmat Analyst.
The primary responsibility of this role is to provide technical expertise in hazardous materials (hazmat) transportation compliance and management to support all Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) locations to meet or exceed regulatory requirements. This role will engage with regulatory agencies and collaborate with business leaders to bring awareness and compliance guidance to complex issues.
Reporting to the Hazmat Transportation & Compliance Manager, the person in this role will support the objective to develop and implement hazmat policies, programs, and training, ensuring Toyota’s regulatory compliance and risk mitigation to avoid business interruptions.
What you’ll be doing
Determine the applicability of state, federal, and international regulations (i.e., IMO, ICAO, UN, DOT, NOM, TDG), Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) requirements, and industry best practices to standardize compliant hazmat transportation policies.
Translate complex regulatory interpretations into actionable instructions for operational processes.
Monitor rapidly changing hazmat transportation regulations and adapt Toyota policies in the shifting regulatory landscape.
Provide regulatory guidance to support lithium battery engineering, design, manufacturing, and packaging across TMNA and TMC, aligned with the evolving lithium battery landscape.
Use SME knowledge and experience to develop tools, programs audits, and systems to standardize compliance functions, identify organizational risk and provide stability with hazmat shipping processes.
Develop & implement policies, programs, and procedures for the management of hazmat throughout TMNA, including affiliates within the USA, Canada & Mexico.
Engage with emerging regulations and legislation through the development of regulatory interpretation, guidance, and application to all areas of hazmat transport.
Develop & implement training resources, content, eLearnings, and reporting capabilities to drive appropriate deployment of compliance training throughout TMNA, including affiliates within the USA, Canada & Mexico.
Provide targeted regulatory risk identification, quantification, and mitigation advice as required.
Support North American and international Toyota business units in hazmat transportation regulations.
Collaborate with the packaging teams to ensure all packaging meets regulatory requirements prior to part movement in the supply chain.
Support Toyota leadership with communications to government agencies (State, Federal and International) on compliance matters (i.e., special permits, compliance investigations, etc.).
Represent Toyota in automotive industry forums and hazmat trade associations, actively engaging in regulatory advocacy and contributing to the development, interpretation, and advancement of evolving hazmat and transportation regulations.
What you bring
Bachelor’s degree or 5+ years of direct experience in Hazmat Transportation Compliance within a manufacturing or automotive environment.
Strong working knowledge of of domestic and international Dangerous Goods regulations (49 CFR, IATA, IMDG) and the ability to interpret and apply requirements to real-world operation.
Experience supporting cross-functional teams (Engineering, Packaging, Purchasing, Logistics) with practical, risk-based compliance guidance.
Demonstrated ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, actionable direction for diverse audiences.
Experience developing or supporting compliance processes, procedures, or document control systems that ensure audit readiness and consistency.
Added bonus if you have
Advanced degree in a related field (e.g., Environmental, Engineering, Supply Chain, Regulatory Affairs).
Professional certifications, such as Certified Dangerous Goods Professional (CDGP), Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or similar.
Experience with lithium battery transportation regulations and emerging electrification-related compliance consideration.
Proficiency in Power Platform tools (Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate) to support compliance tracking and reporting.
Dangerous Goods training certification (49 CFR, IATA, IMDG).
Experience interfacing with regulatory agencies or supporting audits and compliance reviews.
Completion of Toyota Business Practices (TBP), including problem-solving panel certification.
Experience building or applying structured compliance frameworks (e.g., ISO-aligned systems, internal governance models).
